Toyota builds in in "janitors" of a car sensors for warning of other drivers of bad weather

Customers: Toyota

Mechanical and Instrument Engineering

Contractors: Weathernews

Project date: 2019/11

At the beginning of November, 2019 it became known that Toyota and Weathernews company integrated forces for increase in forecast accuracy of weather. For this purpose they use data which are obtained in real time from the sensors which are built in in "janitors" of cars. Warning of rains will be passed on to other drivers.

During tests which began in October in Tokyo to Osaka and prefecture of IT, Weathernews began to obtain data from window wipers of the Toyota cars. Sensors fix the movement of "janitors" and transmit data through the Internet in a cloud service. It is supposed that the included "janitors" point to existence of rainfall, and the speed of their work corresponds to intensity of heavy rain. All this information is analyzed together with data of traditional observations of weather conditions. In total the new network covered 13,000 points across all Japan.

Weathernews notes that its radar sensors used for detection of cumulonimbus clouds and identification of areas with bad weather are not capable to detect existence osadkok at the height of 2000 meters or below. Instruments of land observation Weathernews are even more limited therefore the joint project with Toyota carmaker came in handy.

Toyota, the largest producer of cars in Japan, pursues the aims. The company stated that it hopes to provide to drivers a detailed weather forecast in real time for increase in security on roads. The exact weather forecast will become one of the services provided together with the newest models of cars. Since the Crown and Corolla Sport models which are released in June, 2018, Toyota intends to provide Internet access practically to all to the cars sold in domestic market. Thus, new models are included into Internet of Things and allow drivers to obtain the most different data in real time.[1]
