2021: Three times faster mobile application response time

Yota tripled the response time of the mobile application using the Tarantool in-memory computing platform. The technology also helps the operator to launch products for customers to the market faster. This was announced on March 23, 2021 by the company Mail.ru Digital Technologies.

Tarantool Cache is an intermediary between user and system services: it tracks and accumulates changes in databases, billing and other systems, and updates information in the application and other products of the operator. So, for example, if the communication packet expires, the cache service instantly updates the data, and the Yota client immediately learns about it. The Tarantool service allowed you to accelerate the application three times.

Yota also transferred an internal product catalog to the Tarantool platform, which stores information about package offers and tariffs in different regions of the country. Using this data, Yota builds the logic of customer service. If earlier it took several weeks for a full-fledged release with analytics and testing, now it takes no more than three days to configure the product catalog.

2019: Tarantool caching system

On February 11, 2019, Yota announced that it had implemented a caching system on the Tarantool platform to increase the speed of working with user data. The omnichannel "fast" cache will increase the speed of online processing of user profiles and the interactivity of company services. Yota has been working with the Tarantool platform since 2017.

According to the company, a number of existing and planned IT solutions of Yota require data from many sources: a set of connected products, balance, etc. When data is queried and received sequentially, the performance of applications depends directly on the sources, and the poor performance of one element affects the entire system. The Tarantool cache platform increases the speed of data exchange and reduces the complexity of interacting with heterogeneous sources.

After first accessing profile information, the platform stores this result in a "fast" cache. In the future, the system refers only to it, which guarantees a completely different level of speed and data availability. At the same time, the information is not outdated: sources send notifications of all changes that are taking place, so the cache is always current. As a result, applications have up-to-date information at any time, regardless of the number of sources and their performance.

The cache platform solves several problems at once: it creates a single data access point, provides information in a fraction of a second and maintains its relevance. Before entering the market, we ran Tarantool in our own projects for many years, and therefore the platform optimally solves this problem.

2016: Replace Oracle with DBMS Mail.ru

In January 2016, the Mail.ru Group announced that the mobile operator Yota began commercial operation of the Tarantool DBMS developed by it. The operator will use this DBMS for online data processing.

Yota told TAdviser that Oracle DBMS was previously used for the described tasks. The company did not completely abandon this DBMS, added to Yota.

The implementation of the new DBMS Yota led, based on consultations with Mail.Ru. Consultations are online, which significantly accelerated the process, TAdviser told Yota.

The Mail.ru Group noted that the introduction of the new DBMS will save significant amounts on licenses and servers, and that Yota is one of the first telecommunications companies to "appreciate the advantages of Tarantool."

Earlier, in August 2016, the Mail.ru Group reported that Tarantool was beginning to be introduced in VimpelCom (operating under the Beeline brand) as an online data processing platform. On the basis of Tarantool for Vimpelcomf, a data virtualization platform and a number of applications were developed. (Learn more about this project in a separate article).

Before bringing Tarantool to market, developers used it for many years on their own projects.
