Remote education — education which is in whole or in part performed using computers and telecommunication technologies and means. The subject of remote education is deleted from the teacher, and/or educational means, and/or educational resources. Remote education is performed with dominance in educational process of remote educational technologies, forms, methods and training aids and also using information and educational arrays of the Internet.

It is considered that the first attempt of creation of a remote form of education was made in 1840 when Isaak Pitman using mailings began to train in shorthand of students in the United Kingdom. In Russia date of official development of distance learning can be considered on May 30, 1997 when there was an order of the Ministry of Education of Russia permitting to educational institutions to train students remotely.

Many mistakenly believe that the correspondence and remote forms of education are the same, however, in a root the wrong opinion. If the correspondence student comprehends elements of knowledge independently, using textbooks, and only two or three times a year can ask questions to teachers (depending on the number of sessions), then the person, the student remotely, on the Internet, has permanent contact with teachers. On a correspondence course the rate of assimilation of knowledge - fixed and uniform for all group, and at distance learning at each student is an opportunity to devote more difficult and to subjects, important for it, more than forces and time for profound study. Certainly, for each passable section of the program students report, not less strictly, than on internal or correspondence department.
