Education

2022: 5.3 thousand students from Venezuela study in the United States

52% of all international students in the United States come from only two countries: China (290 thousand students as of 2022) and India (199 thousand)

The third place with a lag of almost 5 times from the second is occupied by South Korea: a little more than 40 thousand residents of this country at that time studied in the United States.

Only 4.8 thousand people left Russia for the United States to study, 14.4 thousand from Nigeria, 5 thousand from Thailand, 5.3 from Venezuela.

Tourism

2022

For 2022, the safest places to soak up the sun are Caracas beaches and Margarita Island. Some tourist infrastructure has been preserved there, but only people with an above average income can afford to come there.

Ordinary tourists can ride a little further than Caracas to La Guaira, where you can relax well.

There are also lovers of making their way to the beaches for the local poor, but doing this is only at your own risk. Robbery is far from the worst thing that can happen to you there.

In La Guaira, locals like to arrange "courage checks" (although more like a special kind of natural selection) - during a storm, jump from the pier right into the sea. Local waves cannot be called calm - some clever people are thrown right onto the rocks, where they break their heads and then swim to the last in the water. Do you think someone catches corpses? No, of course not. The response of the local public on this issue is completely worthy of its place in the fund of great quotes: The waves will be thrown away themselves.

Crime

2022

A sharp decrease in the income of citizens contributed to the heyday of not only transnational criminal groups (ELN, FARC, El Tren de Aragua and others), but also local ones, which for 2022 are engaged in abductions (primarily foreigners), extortion and smuggling of everything that can be sold, including food and fuel.

For example, in the state of Zulia, both classic theft and extortion and illegal mining of useful people minerals on Lake Maracaibo are popular.

Even more dangerous is the atmosphere in areas outside the administrative centers of the state. Even special services officers do not rush there once again, and servicemen move only as part of columns.

In small settlements in the daytime, you can observe outwardly idyllic paintings - fallen trees on the sidelines and children playing cheerfully nearby. However, with the arrival of the night, these "children" are armed with machine guns and control at homemade checkpoints.

Everyone passing by is stopped and demanded to pay the "due tax." If you refuse or try to pass without paying, you will simply be shot and the body thrown in the forest. The car will be sold on the side.

Half of neighboring Guyana declared 24th state of Venezuela due to plans by US companies to extract oil there

In October 2023, the oil company Chevron entered into an agreement to acquire all shares of Hess Corporation for $60 billion. Thus, Chevron gained access to the largest oil fields in Guyana, which is already called one of the "most promising assets" in the company's portfolio.

In Guyana, Exxon is already operating, which at the end of October made a "significant discovery of oil and gas" on the Stabrook block. Up to 1.2 million barrels per day are expected to be produced there by 2027.

At the same time, there is an increased diplomatic activity of the Guyana authorities in relation to the disputed territories with Venezuela. The appeal to the UN about holding a referendum in the disputed territories looks like protecting the national interests of Guyana, but in reality it is about the interests of TNKs, which need access to the fields located there.

The long-term territorial dispute between the two countries over the ownership of a territory of 159.5 thousand square meters. km west of the Essequibo River, called "Guyana-Essequibo," claimed by Venezuela, escalated due to the provision of oil concessions by Guyana to ExxonMobil. The maritime boundaries of this area have not yet been determined. In addition, the United States plans to deploy a military base on the disputed territory to protect the assets of American companies. In the future, it can be used to put pressure on the Venezuelan government.

On December 3, 2023, the people of Venezuela voted in a referendum to support their country's claim to the oil and mineral rich territory of neighboring Guyana.

The referendum, which Guyana described as a pretext for "annexation," marks a new stage in the dispute over the Essequibo region, which escalated after ExxonMobil discovered oil in the Stabroek block off its coast in 2015.

On December 6, 2023, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared the western part of Guyana - Essequibo - the 24th state of the country. He proposed to create units of departments on the annexed territory that issue licenses for the production of gas, oil and minerals.

State oil and gas company PDVSA and Guyana's Venezuelan Corporation CVG have been instructed to set up appropriate units in Guyana-Essequibo and issue oil, gas and mineral production licenses. A period of three months has also been set for the cessation of oil production on undivided areas of the offshore under licenses issued to foreign companies by the Government of Guyana.
