Source of secondary power supply, the automatic device which purpose to provide electric equipment connected to it with a regular supply electrical energy within regulation. GOST 13109-87 defines the following regulations in an electropower line: voltage of 220 V + 10%; frequency is 50 Hz + 1 Hz; nonlinear distortion coefficient of a form of voltage less than 8% also less than 12% (are long) (quickly).

As malfunctions in a power line are considered: accident of mains voltage (tension completely will be gone in a power line); high-voltage impulse interference (sharp increase in tension up to 6 kVA lasting from 10 up to 100 ms); long-term and short-term replanting and bumps; high-frequency noise (the high-frequency noises transferred on the power supply network); runout of frequency (frequency deviation more than on 3 Hz).

Mass use of the UPS is connected with ensuring smooth operation of computers, allowing the equipment connected to the UPS at loss of electric current or at an exit of its parameters for admissible regulations, some short (as a rule — till one o'clock) time to continue work. Except computers, UPSes provide with a power supply and other electric load critical to existence of a power supply with normal to parameters of an electropower line, for example control circuits heating boilers. The UPS is capable to adjust parameters (tension, frequency) of output network. It can be combined with different types of generators of the electric power (for example, the diesel generator). The important indicators causing the choice of the scheme of creation of the UPS are switching time of load of a power supply from rechargeable batteries and operating time from the rechargeable battery.
