2020: Hisense 85U9E is the first 8K-TV with two displays

2019: The standard for 8K-TVs is approved

At the end of September, 2019 the Association of consumer technologies (Consumer Technology Association) published official determination of the display for 8K-TVs and also provided a logo which producers can use. Determination included all requirements to number of pixels, digital inputs, scanning and depth of color. This official step marks transition to new generation of television permission.

Now the device with the screen with a resolution not less than 33 megapixels (not less than 7680 x 4320 pixels) with screen 16:9 aspect ratio supporting update rates of 24, 30 and 60 fps, 10-bit representation of color and the ITU-R BT.2100 color space can be considered as TV 8K Ultra HD. The TV should support the HDR functions and protection of digital content of HDCP 2.2.

Also function of scaling of video input signal of HD, SD and 4 K up to the resolution of 8K should be used. At the same time at an output to the screen of a test grid 1х1 modulations of contrast should have running start from 50% — this characteristic imposes significant restrictions for use of pixel shift.

Producers of TVs can begin to use a new logo on devices since January 1, 2020, and the start of the program of certification made by Association 8K (Hisense, Panasonic, Samsung and TCL) is expected even earlier.

Determination only formalizes arrival of TVs of new generation, early 8K TVs precisely correspond to it. To some extent it is only formality, however it fixes initial characteristics which any buyer purchasing TV 8K has the right to expect.

TVs 8K are already presented at the market, and it is expected that only in the USA their sales in 2019 will reach $734 million (for 175,000 TVs).[1]
