Laurels Svyatoslav Sergeyevich

Person

Professor S.S. Lavrov is a teacher and the mentor of many modern scientists and specialists in information technology field. The scientific fate of S.S. Lavrov, as well as a measure of his influence on development of programming in Russia, is unique. Svyatoslav Sergeyevich stood at the origins of use of ADP equipment for the solution of really difficult and responsible computing tasks. After that, in process of emergence of software engineering in the form in which we understand it now, he was among the few people who at once apprehended the new ideas, who understood their practical value and made the big contribution to their development. At the last stage of the scientific biography S.S. Lavrov undertook solving of tasks of artificial intelligence, the tasks extremely difficult inherently which setting often advances the opportunities which are available at the moment according to their solution. Professor S.S. Lavrov is the author of the well-known textbook on the ALGOL programming language which became the reference book for many who joined ADP equipment those years. Svyatoslav Lavrov was also a colleague of Sergey Korolev in whose team he worked on creation and start of the Soviet ballistic missiles and also on the first program of start of the person in space.

EMC announced in June, 2011 that it will provide technology examination, products and a financial support for the project on digitalizing of manuscripts of the outstanding Russian scientist and computer technologies specialist – professor Svyatoslav Sergeyevich Lavrov which are stored in Institute of the systems of information science of A.P. Yershov (ISI Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science). This support will be given within an initiative of EMC Information Heritage Initiative directed to protection and preserving in a digital format of heritage of mankind in order that important historical documents and works of art were easily available to the next generations.

Photos, diaries, films, letters, ancient texts, music and works of the fine arts — all this a part of world information heritage. However many of these historical documents and cultural artifacts are under the threat of disappearance. The EMC company supports efforts of individuals and the organizations around the world for preserving and protection of these important particles of our history. Within this initiative the EMC company provides the equipment, the software, expert knowledge, financial aid and recognition by that who uses digital means for preserving of world heritage and makes it available through the Internet for researches and studying. So, in 2008 the EMC company selected a grant for preserving of an invaluable collection of Musical Library of the St. Petersburg academic philharmonic hall which employees addressed to corporation within the existing program. The project on creation of electronic archive of the prof. Svyatoslav Sergeyevich Lavrov was initiated by the St. Petersburg development center of EMC and supported by corporation. The total amount of investments of EMC exceeded 100 thousand dollars of the USA.

The solution intended for creation of electronic archive of the prof. S.S. Lavrov consists of the unified platform of storage of EMC and the software of EMC Captiva for automation of input and management of documents in archive. This set of the equipment and software relies on modern technologies, such as multilevel storage, deduplication of redundant data and allows to organize effective storage of large volumes of unstructured information. The software of EMC CAPTIVA will allow to accelerate the translation of information in an electronic form from paper carriers. Earlier this process took away a lot of time and required many human resources, now the intellectual functions of scanning put in EMC Captiva, simplify information input and eliminate a negative impact of a human factor.
