In the mid-eighties Ben worked in ITT company.

CGE (after Alcatel) purchased a telecom assets of ITT.

Within nine years worked in the Dutch company KPN, holding a position of the chairman and managing director of its telecommunication child structure of PTT Telecom.

Since September, 1997 he held a position of the vice-chairman of management board of Lucent Technologies in the USA.

From February, 2002 to June 1, 2008 Ben Verwaayen was the chief executive officer of British Telecom company.

On September 1, 2008 Board of Directors of Ben Verwaayen Alcatel-Lucent company it was appointed the chief executive officer of the company and it is entered into the structure of Board of Directors. At the time of appointment Ben Vervaayen was 56 years old. Ran Ben Verwaayen the company from its headquarters in Paris.

In February, 2013 in Alcatel-Lucent announced losses for the amount of 1.37 billion euros and announced search of the new CEO. Ben Vervayen resigns as soon as to him pick up replacement, and he is not going to try to obtain re-election in Board of Directors.

But in the fourth quarter Alcatel-Lucent suffered losses on a mentioned amount at turnover in 4.1 billion euros, turnover decreased by 1.3% in comparison with the fourth quarter 2011.
