For the first time in 100-year history the IBM corporation will be headed by the female director. To replace Samjuel Palmisano Virginia Rometty is appointed.

IBM announced appointment of the CEO of corporation. This is Virginia Rometty (Virginia Rometty). It will accept a position at the CEO Sam Palmisano. Palmisano was a CEO within nearly ten years, he was 60 years old. He remains on a post of the chairman of the board of directors.

Rometti is 54 years old, now she is responsible for sales and marketing. After its transition to a position of the CEO, the woman there will be at the head of two largest in the world technology companies. Last month Meg Whitman was appointed the CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Before Whitman ran eBay: this company was started during a boom of dotcoms and afterwards it became a leader in the field of electronic trading.

While Whitman received the company which development it is possible to call chaotic today, Rometti will be hit in the hands carefully built business of IBM which purposes and tasks consist in obtaining high profitability from sale of technology services and the software.

Let's remind that in HP the female director - Carly Fiorina worked earlier, but her board in 2005 came to the end with leaving. Fiorina was forced to leave the company after the disappointing financial effects of its persistent fight for Compaq Computer acquisition.

According to Associated Press, the solution of IBM on Rometti's appointment was unexpected. Palmisano always curtailed a talk on the leaving, insisting that he wants to remain as the head. In rare comments which it gave last year sounded that it "will not get to anywhere", and in IBM there is no official policy of dictatorship - when to the CEO to resign.

The analyst IDC Gin Jean Bozman called appointments of these persons "creation of an improbable precedent" in promotion of female heads. "It is the good sign, - Bozman emphasized. - Such atmosphere where the most high-ranking female heads will be able to understand what heights they will reach is created".

Palmisano noted in the statement that Rometti headed some of the most important business divisions IBM and did a great job on formation of group of business services of the company. It controlled the transaction in $3.5 billion on acquisition of consulting business of PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2002. According to Palmisano, it "more than excellent head".

Bobby Cameron, the analyst of Forrester research company who works with IBM for many years, told that at meetings with Rometti its participation and inquisitiveness is noticeable. Important personal characteristic of this head is its interest in new technologies, and not just establishment of leadership on sales. Cameron considers that it is ideal for this position. "I think that she is clever. She asks questions, she not just works according to the diagram and she is interested in superiority, and not just in management of amounts. These are lines which are important for having for the CEO", - the analyst told.

Palmisano gave the same characteristics that was mentioned by Cameron. "I think, everything will be still, and I think that it is good", - he told.

Earlier IBM companies held a position of the CEO:

Thomas Watson (Thomas J. Watson) - May 1914 May, 1956, Thomas Watson (Thomas J. Watson) ml. May, 1956 - June, 1971, Vincent T. Vincent Learson June, 1971 – January, 1973, Franck Carry (Frank T.
