The Moscow airports test the system of biometric identification

Customers: Sheremetyevo Airport (MASh)

Product: The projects of control systems of access based on identification of the person (biometrics)

Project date: 2011/09

At the Moscow airports the automated system of biometric identification is implemented. Thanks to it passengers will be able soon to undergo passport control, without meeting the employee of customs. Biometric cameras successfully passed laboratory tests, and in a month experiences will continue in actual practice. In December, 2011 several cabins of control will be set at the Sheremetyevo airport.

Quite recently it was only the concept, today – ready development for border check-points of control. Identification of the person is performed by the biometric camera on the basis of passport data:

  • the passenger puts the passport to the scanner;
  • the scanner reads out images of the second and third page of the passport and also data of the chip;
  • the camera registers the image of a human face;
  • the received image is compared to passport details.

All procedure takes at most a minute. During this time the device verifies authenticity of the passport, verifies the photo and the owner, search in databases of intelligence agencies at the same time conducts. Scientists assure that to deceive the system of recognition of the person impracticablly.

Now this work is performed by frontier guards. On check of each person 2-3 minutes leave, at the same time the operator has the right to work no more than two hours in a row. Considering that the passenger traffic constantly grows, implementation of an automated system of control is obviously relevant.

The international airport Sheremetyevo completed the first test stage of the new biometric safety system based on application of three-dimensional model of a surface of the person in February, 2011. A system provides the automated recognition of the personality with the minimum participation of the person in the course of ID that is especially relevant taking into account requirements of Rules of protection of the airports and objects of their infrastructure (are approved by the order of the Government of the Russian Federation of February 1, 2011 No. 42).

The operation principle of a system consists in video registration of the person in the 3D format using the special three-dimensional camera. The technology of three-dimensional scanning allows to remove information on a surface of objects (depth), using the principle of the structured illumination. Projecting on the person a special grid under a parallax corner, a system obtains information on the distortions of a projection created by geometry of the person and calculates exact provision of each point in three-dimensional space. Further when passing through a tourniquet with the control chart of access a system compares the person shown to the camera to the three-dimensional image written in the database. At coincidence a system permits pass.

A system was tested by the staff of Service of aviation security of the airport. During testing the speed of work and reliability of a system were checked. As a result of tests it is recorded that data recording of each person takes no more than 2 sec., the speed of recognition is less than 1 sec. During this time the device manages to read out information from a surface of the person, having analyzed 40 thousand points on the person, to construct a mathematical model of the person with a submillimeter accuracy and also to make comparison with persons in the database. In structure with the actuator capacity of a point of control up to 30 persons/min. is reached.

A new system was also tested on capability of recognition of attempts of forgery and deception, substitution of cards of access from registered persons. In a month more than 3.5 thousand passes were made and not revealed any case of an error at which a system would pass the unregistered employee. Testing was held in the automatic mode without participation of the security service specialist.

A new biometric system does not require physical contact or exact positioning in front of the device. A system is capable to distinguish people of different age and growth; points, hairstyles and beards have no impact on quality of recognition.
