VMware vSphere in GVTs Russian Railway

Customers: GVTs Russian Railway major computer center

Moscow; Information technologies

Contractors: Digital Design
Product: VMware vSphere

Project date: 2011/08

The Digital Design company in cooperation with JSC Russian Railways completed the first stage of the large-scale project on virtualization of servers of automated systems in JSC "Russian Railways". As a result of more than 2000 servers it is transferred to virtual environment.

The project was implemented in Major computer center – the Russian Railway branch of JSC which is responsible for operation of all IT resources of Russian Railways and having geographically distributed structure which includes 17 regional data processing centers across all Russia. In each point modern hardware complexes on ultracompact a blade servers were constructed that allowed to reduce considerably costs of the electric power and to reduce the occupied space in server. On these complexes virtual environment based on VMware vSphere 4.1 was unrolled.

"Now more than 2000 servers of automated systems are transferred to virtual environment which functions all on the 400th physical a blade servers now. In the nearest future the next stage on migration of 1000 more servers will be implemented, – Dmitry Tatarinov, the director of the department of infrastructure solutions, Digital Design tells. - Perhaps, it is possible to call the project in the Russian Railway which duration was 10 months one of the largest in the field of virtualization in Russia. He allowed to create a uniform pool of computing resources which it is possible to manage flexibly and quickly. In fact, it is a step on the way to creation of a private cloud".

Also within the project specialists of Digital Design created the solution on backup of virtual servers using the product Veeam Backup & Replication for increase in fault tolerance. A system allows to recover virtual machines or data located on them. Management is implemented in a combination to monitors of virtual environment based on Veeam Monitor. Product introduction of Veeam Reporter provided data collection and reporting that gives the chance to receive a comprehensive review of functioning of virtual infrastructure and to analyze data on her for further improvement.

Kirill Baranov, the associate director of Major computer center, JSC "Russian Railways", comments: "Virtualization promotes that IT infrastructure of Russian Railways becomes more managed. The solution implemented by Digital Design company gives the chance more quickly to solve the incidents connected with infrastructure, to monitor loading and to accurately plan expansion of a complex depending on requirements. Besides, the technology of virtualization allows to standardize the operated server hardware and to increase fault tolerance of systems".
