In the cloud Linux market steps on heels of Microsoft. Not to lose Windows and to involve developers in "cloud", Microsoft is forced to accept open source.

Together with growth of popularity of technologies on the basis of the open code, demand for use of platforms - as - service (PaaS), created on this basis grows. They are demanded, first of all, by developers of cloud applicaions. To strengthening of positions of "cloud" of Azure, Microsoft she also intends to apply open source.

Matt Asay, the vice president of Nodeable for business development, considers that such solution - sign of bigger openness of "cloud" from Microsoft. Confirmation to that is understanding by the company of need to involve in development of Azure of third-party developers, and recent actions of Microsoft for inclusion of node.js, MongoDB and Hadoop should be considered as a part of its cloud offer.

However, according to a research of the Dr Dobb's Journal edition of 2010 whose reader's audience generally – technology experts of Microsoft, 91.4% of respondents are not engaged in deployment of solutions in "cloud". It sharply contradicts reports of other analysts on implementation of "clouds" (for example, to a research of cloud implementations from Morgan Stanley Research) where the conclusion that Microsoft Azure is at demand top in the market of cloud deployments is drawn. Perhaps, and occurs in Redmond, notes Asay, but not in other places.

In the chart the question is asked below: what provider of a cloud will you prefer at deployment? Professionals select Azure from technologies of Microsoft.

Told does not mean that Microsoft could not offer developers in Azure. The company created the platform - as - service (PaaS) and now, according to the latest data of Nasuni company, in key aspects this platform surely competes with Amazon Web Services. But at the same time there is an opportunity to shoot ahead and in cloud solutions for the enterprises which for Microsoft are a tidbit, the expert considers.

Microsoft is not lonely here, but the potential risk at it is the highest, Dave Rosenberg, the colleague Asaya as the company long did not welcome desire of developers – to take part in development of this "cloud" specifies.

At the same time, as reports the Ostatic.org project, Linux and other technologies on the basis of the open code develop "clouds", promising acceleration of development of this trend since 2012. According to Asaya, it makes an impression and reminds a situation when projects of Linux (in particular Ubuntu) considered Windows of guest OS in the cloud offers. If this trend proceeds in high gear, the expert notes, Microsoft will see the death of "milk cow" - Windows. And at the moment Microsoft risks to lose applications of the next generation / workloads which will be taken by community Linux if Microsoft is not able to provide favored treatment to open source technologies in Azure "cloud".

This fight not for the one who will make the service cheaper or whose "cloud" is more scaled, but for the one who will offer developers new generation of the cloud tools necessary for implementation of rapid development and these tools are in the majority created using an open source code. Microsoft decided to accept this fact, but not to fight against it. Developers have a considerable impact on providers of cloud services, and they want open source. Microsoft wants to remain at top, so, it should accept these technologies of development and to promote them.
