The WD company announced in December, 2011 the beginning of deliveries of 1-TB hard drives using only one plate – WD10EZRX. This new model which filled up family of the SATA drives WD Caviar Green due to use of plates with the increased recording density and Advanced Format (AF) technologies and also applications of a double-drive system of positioning of heads shows noticeably the increased performance, showing reading speed to 150 Mbps. At the same time in comparison with the disks of the same class using bigger number of plates, the new model with the improved power management shows the energy consumption reduced on a third and smaller noise level.
The drives WD Caviar Green are eco-friendly hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology technology which reduces energy consumption, reduces the working temperature and noise level and also increases reliability. Hard drives of a line WD Caviar Green consume on average 4-5 W less, than normal drives for desktop computers. It allows the customers caring for economy of energy to create systems having not only the bigger capacity, but also a proper correlation of high-speed performance, inherent reliability and the lowered energy consumption. Drives with WD GreenPower technology monitor workload and as far as possible automatically switch in the idling mode for the purpose of further reduction of energy consumption. In new disks this technology gained further development, having increased efficiency of the work on decrease in energy consumption as a disk.
Environmental friendliness of new disks is defined not only their reduced energy consumption, but also technology of their production. The Western Digital company pays special attention to environment protection therefore new disks for 99% consist of materials which can be overworked and reused further. In addition in a new series of disks completely there are no halogen containing substances which can select highly toxic connections in the atmosphere.
High performance of new disks is provided with a number of technology improvements:
- The maximum recording density – 1TB on a plate – provides higher access rate to data;
- The volume of a buffer memory of DDR2 increased up to 64 MB. Earlier so large volume of a cache could be met only at high-performance HDD of high capacity.
- The double-drive system of positioning of heads allowing to reduce response time of the hard drive and increasing its performance.
- The Advanced Format technology of new generation automatically determines terms of use of drives and itself makes necessary changes (alignment of sectors) in the systems equipped with Windows XP.
