Content

EMC together with the largest British producer of cars of a premium class Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) implemented the horizontally scalable EMC Isilon NAS systems for simplification of storage system of Big Data, increase in its capacity and performance improvement.

Tasks

The need for reduction of duration of a cycle of release of new products and reduction of dependence on physical testing forced engineers of JLR to improve and optimize process of virtual modeling and to report to production divisions analysis results which can be used in practice.

JLR applies powerful automated design engineering systems (CAD) and high-performance computing (High Performance Computing, HPC) to development, detailed design and check of design of each new machine to guarantee: all cars released by the company are optimized for different requirements of buyers, including security, quality, reliability, dynamism, aerodynamic characteristics, performance and profitability.

Solution

In 2010 in the company the project which purpose - to reduce dependence on physical testing and to expand use of computer simulation is implemented. Among requirements there was also a new architecture of data storage providing scaling in process of growth of requirements of JLR for the analysis using computer simulation. These functions provided to the customer of the EMC Isilon system.

For 100 percent use of a CAD for release of the new JLR cars invested means in technologies for improvement of opportunities of computer simulation. Increase in the calculations necessary for modeling demanded to raise significantly the data storage performance, however outdated storage system which serviced a CAD earlier, could not provide such performance level.

JLR studied different candidate solutions and selected the horizontally scalable EMC Isilon NAS system as it provides the required performance and capacity. The company unrolled a cluster from 54 Isilon X-Series nodes for the centralized data storage of a CAD used by client computers. The cluster of HPC provides single solution for data management of a CAD both for computer simulation, and for physical testing, including security tests, reliability, a framework, aerodynamic characteristics, driving and driving. Besides, JLR uses a separate cluster of Isilon NL-Series for backup and data recovery in case of disasters; the software of Isilon SyncIQ provides asynchronous replication of data between the main cluster X-Series and a remote cluster of NL-Series.

To it the solution for information storage system which is capable to process quickly Big Data which the customer obtains thanks to progress of technology of computer simulation is required. EMC Isilon provided to JLR the simple, flexible and scalable platform which allowed JLR to receive a maximum of performance and capacity, to simplify management and to reduce influence on the environment of its IT infrastructure".
