General Electric Digital Energy: SG Series

Product
Developers: General Electric Digital Energy
Last Release Date: April, 2012
Technology: UPS - Uninterruptible power supply units,  Data processing centers are technologies for DPC

Representatives of General Electric Digital Energy announced in the spring of 2012 SG Series uninterruptible power supply units with eBoost technology which deliveries began in Europe and Russia.

"Reduction of energy consumption of data processing centers becomes one of the major problems, especially in connection with development of cloud computing. UPSes with eBoost technology allow to reduce energy costs of DPC and also reduce requirements to the power of reserve diesel generators" — Kass Rosenberg, the director of GE Digital Energy of sales of the UPS in countries of Eastern Europe and the CIS emphasized.

SG Series UPSes are the three-phase on-line systems with double conversion for a broad spectrum of applications, including DPC. These devices belonging to the class of the VFI systems (Voltage and Frequency Independent) are supplied with IGBT rectifiers, control algorithms by which are created on the basis of PurePulse technology.

Usually the efficiency of uninterruptible power supply units with double conversion varies ranging from 92 up to 94%. Producers aim to increase value of this coefficient to reduce losses of the electric power, to reduce expenses of customers and also to provide compliance to the requirements of the state and public organizations directed to reduction of electricity consumption and level of emissions of a carbon dioxide gas.

One of possible ways of growth of efficiency — use of a "bypass" power supply of loading through a bypass chain when parameters of network do not go beyond tolerance limits. It allows to exclude such components as the rectifier, the inverter and the output transformer from a feed circuit.

At use of eBoost technology condition monitoring of the power supply network is performed by the high-performance processor of signal processing supporting special control algorithms. The chain of a bypass provides permanent bias of secondary winding of the output transformer that allows to put into operation at deterioration in parameters of network the inverter for millisecond shares. The Rezultirushchy value of total time of change of the UPS modes of the updated SG series does not exceed 2 ms. It is quite enough for servers of data processing centers. Their switch mode power supplies are supplied with condensers and are capable to maintain operability of computing systems in the absence of tension on an input with an efficiency up to 20 ms of new UPSes reaches 99%.

To six SG Series devices can integrate with eBoost technology based on architecture of Redundant Parallel Architecture in parallel systems with power up to 3000 kVA. The new payment of management of Flex DSP which in further will be applied in all uninterruptible power supply units of GE contains the reserved logic of management of a bypass and uses the Manchester code for data exchange between UPSes connected in parallel. It contains also "a black box" — the non-volatile memory intended for fixing on 32 channels of transition processes and the major parameters in case of start of the trigger at emergence of emergency situations.

According to GE Digital Energy, IPB SG Series with eBoost technology conforming to requirements of the Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturers Association organization provide decrease from 12 to 4% of the losses connected with the UPS in allocation of costs of the electric power for needs of the different systems of data processing centers.

In 2011 sales of the GE UPS in Russia and other CIS countries increased by 16%. SG Series UPSes with eBoost technology can increase this indicator in the current year. This technology is provided more than two years to the USA, and now UPSes on its basis are brought into accord to the European standards.
