Oracle Sun ZFS Backup Appliance

The Oracle corporation announced in April, 2012 Sun ZFS Backup Appliance — integrated solution of data backup for the optimized hardware and software systems of Oracle, including Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and Oracle SPARC SuperCluster T4-4. The new solution allows to create effective environments of testing and development based on Oracle Database using technology of hybrid pokolonochny compression.

With the solution Oracle Sun ZFS Backup Appliance the complete backup copy of data can be created with a speed up to 20 terabyte per hour, and to recover data with speed up to 9.4 terabyte per hour, says Oracle. Exclusive speed of backup which is shown by Sun ZFS Backup Appliance is based on copying of unique data, and at the same time the additional server software or the CCP resources is not required, emphasized in the company.

According to developers, Sun ZFS Backup Appliance allows to reduce to 4 times time spent for data recovery in comparison with the competing Oracle Database backup systems. At the same time a system also gives the chance up to 3.9 times to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) during the three-year period in comparison with the competing systems.

The Sun ZFS Backup Appliance system allows to reduce risks of failure at data recovery by optimization of operability of a system using predictive functions of selfrecovery and architecture of management of failures which automatically detects and diagnoses the hidden problems. Besides, end-to-end control summing of data automatically checks and corrects the damaged data at the level of bits, reported in Oracle.

Using the Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) function and direct connection through the TCP/IP protocol by means of the bus InfiniBand the Sun ZFS Backup Appliance system becomes competitors, more effective and profitable in comparison with solutions, and also saves from need to use additional servers and software of backup from other suppliers, developers claim. At the same time, Sun ZFS Backup Appliance helps to avoid complex and expensive changes in procedures of data protection, providing the complete performance and optimal economy of space when using of the recommended procedures of complete and incremental copying of data of RMAN.

In turn, the technology of hybrid pokolonochny compression (Hybrid Columnar Compression, HCC) applied in Sun ZFS Backup Appliance raises an investment payback thanks to effective use of capacity of systems. Pictures of the tables compressed on HCC technology can be cloned without subsequent "release" and to use them for testing, development, quality control, the reporting or additional data protection, noted in Oracle.

The solution Oracle Sun ZFS Backup Appliance differing in simplicity configuring, deployment and managements is available in two configurations — High Performance and High Capacity — and is delivered in the form of the preconfigured server racks that allows to reduce labor input of installation.
