The institute is created in 1894 as the Russia's first model testing basin in the central part of St. Petersburg on the island "New Holland". In 1900 A.N. Krylov whose name the institute bears since 1944 was appointed the head of the model testing basin. Construction of a complex of institute in its modern type was begun in 1936 on the southern outskirts of Leningrad. By 1960 the implementation of the main complex of pools and other test units is complete.

Main activities of Institute

  • conceptual developments in the field of military shipbuilding (forecasting, formation of perspective programs, techniques of assessment of military-economic efficiency, technical and economic job analysis of the industry, etc.);
  • conceptual developments in the field of civil shipbuilding and technical means of mastering of the shelf;
  • project development, including postroyechny documentation, civil courts, the VTRs support vessels and technical means of mastering of the shelf;
  • hydrodynamics (popularity, controllability, seaworthiness, etc.);
  • ship propulsions unit of all types (propulsive, akusticheskiye strength qualities);
  • construction mechanics (durability of constructions static and dynamic, durability of the ship equipment and mechanisms, constructive and armored protection, shock resistance and vibration);
  • ship power and power industry, including atomic and also nuclear and radiation safety;
  • acoustics of the equipment, mechanisms, ships (methods of calculation, measurements and control, technical means of silencing, equipment, noise to work of state automated systems (hydroacoustic stations));
  • stealth-technologies of creation of the ships with the low levels of physical fields (methods of calculation and measurements, methods and management tools parameters of magnetic, electric, low-frequency electromagnetic, radar, optikolokatsionny and thermal fields with problem solving of electromagnetic compatibility of the radio-electronic equipment and electric equipment and decrease in electromagnetic interferences to work of REV);
  • hydrophysics, interaction of physical fields of offshore technical facilities and ocean. Environmental monitoring of water areas with the raised technogenic loading and danger of emergency situations and forecasting of an ecological status of water areas;
  • development and maintaining industry fund of the specifications and technical documentation and standards, certification and licensing, microfilming of technical documentation.
