1983-1987 - the chief physician of the Central sanitary and epidemiologic station of Ministry of Railways of the USSR.

1987-1988 - the assistant of Health department and social security of Council of Ministers of RSFSR.

1988-1991 - the deputy chief of the Head epidemiological department of the Ministry of Health of the USSR.

1993-1996 - the vice-chairman of the State committee of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance of the Russian Federation.

Since June 01, 1996 - the acting chairman of the State committee of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance of the Russian Federation.

Since October 25, 1996 - the First Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation - the chief state health officer of the Russian Federation.

Scientific activity

Gennady Onishchenko is the head of the department of epidemiology of the Russian Medical Academy for Post-Graduate Education (since 1997), professor of department of medicine of work and ecology of the person (since 1998), the academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Science (since 2002), the academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (since 2000), the academician of the International academy of information processes and technologies (since 2002).

Gennady Onishchenko is an author more than 500 published works and 36 collective monographs.

Recognition of specialists was gained by its monographs devoted to the theory and practice of warning and localization of epidemic situations in the conditions of the military conflicts of the last time.

A number of its monographs is devoted to anti-epidemic providing the population in zones of natural disasters. Also it contributed significantly to studying of epidemiology and the organization at the present stage of fight with especially dangerous (cholera, anthrax, plague) and emerdzhentny infections (viral hepatitises B, C and E, the Crimea-Congo hemorrhagic fever and the Western Neil's fever) and also with HIV infection, a typhus and others.

In 1995-2004 with direct participation of Gennady Onishchenko 6 major federal laws directed to consolidation of sanitary and epidemiologic wellbeing of the population of the Russian Federation are drafted: "About warning of distribution in the Russian Federation the disease caused by a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV infection)" (1995, No. 38-FZ), "About immunoprevention of infectious diseases" (1998, No. 157-FZ), "About sanitary and epidemiologic wellbeing of the population" (1999, No. 52-FZ), "About quality and security of foodstuff" (2000, No. 29-FZ) and others^[4].

Under the scientific management and at Gennady Onishchenko's consultation are prepared 21 doctors and 20 candidates of medical sciences^[5].

February 20, 2006 – An award of the Government of the Russian Federation of 2005 in science and technology - for scientific justification, development and deployment of a system of protection of the population of the Russian Federation against new biological threats^[8].

November 16, 2006 – A medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" of the I degree - for a big contribution to preparation and meeting of heads of state and government of member countries of "Group of eight" in the city of St. Petersburg^[9].

December 29, 2008 – An Order of Honour (South Ossetia) - for the courage and high professionalism shown at mitigation of consequences of the humanitarian disaster in South Ossetia and a big personal deposit to improvement of a sanitary and epidemiologic situation of the republic, protection of life and health of its inhabitants.

November 24, 2010 - An Order of Honour - for merits in the field of health care and long-term fair work^[10].

It is awarded with the Medal "In Glory to Ossetia" (Republic of North Ossetia-Alania).
