2012: OS presentation to the Deputy Prime Minister Rogozin

Submitted to the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Rogozin in September, 2012 the operating system (OS) developed by the Russian Defense Ministry of Federal State Unitary Enterprise Central Scientific Research Institute of Economy, Information Science and Management Systems entering subordination the RBC daily newspaper reported. This system is based based on Android OS.

According to representatives the scientific research institute, institute developed the special ROMOS operating system which for a certain payment can be installed on any device where earlier there was Android OS. The main difference of the Russian system from the American analog is that it will not transfer data from the device outside and will receive the certificate of the Ministry of Defence. Theoretically it means that on such device it will be possible to store any confidential information.

The operating system can be installed on tablets and smartphones, at the same time the functionality of Android remains. It is specified that no budgetary funds for system development were spent, and investments into the project and possible cost of a product into scientific research institute do not open yet. The market for a new system is going to be found among corporations and state structures.

Own original mobile device on which OS could work was not at that time created, systems capabilities were shown on the Motorola tablet, specify in Central Research Institute EISU. At the same time OS did not undergo certification and did not appear in a series.

It was supposed that the tablet provided in 2012 will appear in two executions: civil and military shock-proof and water protective. Developers did not exclude sales opportunity of the device in the civil market at the price of 15 thousand rubles. Mass production was going to begin by the end of 2012.

The experts polled by the newspaper believe that from the practical point of view the project is senseless. They express bewilderment why to develop this OS if similar products can be bought according to the tender, having designated the terms of transaction.

2014: Release of the pilot pariah of tablets

In July, 2014 the United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation stated that Centralny nauchno-issledovatelsky institut ekonomiki, informatiki i sistem upravleniya (Central Research Institute EISU) which is its part released pilot lot of especially protected tablets running the domestic operating system (OS)^[1].

The tablet is equipped with the dual-core processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, RAM 1 GB, two MT built-in cameras 0.3 and 5 and "all modern communication modules".

The tablet, according to the statement of creators, running the "Russian operating system" RoMOS constructed on the basis of the Android platform works. OS is equipped with domestic cryptoprotection solutions, the protected Internet connection including using VPN, protection against harmful and spyware. Besides, sensors of connection of malefactors to the virtual base station are integrated into it.

Besides, according to the message of United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation, thanks to "own circuit engineering", in the tablet protection at the hardware level is implemented, "which excludes information leak, unauthorized remote or direct access to the device and also interception of management".

It is possible that mean the physical "smart button" which allows to switch-off at the circuitry level the microphone, a dictophone, cameras, and radio paths 3G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and GLONASS by the protection implemented at the hardware level developers.

In general information security tools of the tablet are developed according to requirements for data protection of the 8th FSB of Russia center (KC2):

• cryptographic data protection,
• protection against listening,
• the entrusted environment of functioning of applications.

In addition to data protection in the tablet protection against influence of the external environment is implemented. The tablet is capable to work under water at depth up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, is protected from falling from height to 2 meters, can work at a temperature of the external environment from - 22 OS to +55oC.

According to Dmitry Petrov, the Deputy CEO of Central Research Institute EISU, the pilot lot of tablets is sent "to security and other federal agencies" for testing. In need of Russia it is possible to assemble thousands of such devices, Petrov says. Creators of the domestic tablet do not consider the consumer civil market for sale.

The main difference of a premiere in July, 2014 from previous is the not only gadget having absolutely Russian design and origin. According to developers, absolutely new product is also the operating system which guarantees to the user complete security against information leaks. The tablet gathers in regime conditions.
