Energy Logic 2.0
The Emerson Network Power company, business division of Emerson company, announced in September, 2012 the publication of the updated recommendations of Energy Logic: Energy Logic 2.0 includes ten strategic plans allowing to achieve before 74% decrease in electricity consumption in DPC on the basis of solutions of any producers. This approach which is in detail described in the special electronic reference book is result of updating of initial approach of Energy Logic published in 2007 and uses the technologies and the best practical recommendations which appeared in the industry for the last five years. The company also announced release of the Energy Logic 2.0 Cascading Savings Calculator calculator, - the online tool by means of which managers of DPC can estimate indicators of economy of energy consumption when using practical recommendations of the updated Energy Logic 2.0.
Thanks to new recommendations and technologies, Energy Logic 2.0 shows as energy consumption of DPC of 465 square meters can be reduced by 74% due to technologies, available in the market. It can achieve, having applied the concept of "cascade effect" which is the base of approach of Energy Logic.
"The cascade effect" allows to define quantitatively in what degree economy on components of IT infrastructure increases at the level of the corresponding systems, and then complex approach for optimization of work and increase in efficiency of key IT systems is recommended to the manager of DPC that, in turn, promotes cost reduction. In DPC with the level of efficiency of use of energy 1.9 saving one watt of power at the level of the server processor involve economy 2.84 watts at the level of all object due to "cascade effect". In DPCs with higher level of efficiency the scale of economy can be even more.
Innovations of Energy Logic 2.0
The initial approach of Energy Logic published in 2007 was based and tested on DPC of 465 square meter. This year Emerson Network Power used a similar example for creation of recommendations of Energy Logic 2.0 again. However the appeared recently technology improvements assume opportunities to achieve more significant savings.
For example:
- Energy Logic 2.0 shows as energy consumption of DPC can decrease from 1543 kW to 408 kW.
- Key strategic components of approach, for example, highly effective components of the server, improvement of architecture of electric power supply systems and also management of ventilation and temperature condition, were updated taking into account the last technology developments.
- The concept of basic DPC also considers universal implementation of virtualization of servers. The optimized DPC on Data Logic of a sample of 2007 assumed virtualization of 20% of servers while in not optimized DPCs in 2012 the level of virtualization of servers reaches already 30%. Besides, consolidation and virtualization of servers in 2012 are a part of uniform strategy as both of these processes usually happen together.
- The architecture of ICT becomes one of the most important factors of optimization of IT and network architectures assuming significant savings of energy.
- Development of management tools infrastructure of DPC (DCIM) is one of indivisible elements of strategy of Energy Logic. These means include energy management of servers, virtualization, architecture of power supply and also management of air flows and temperature condition.
Except the most "cascade effect", the Emerson Network Power company also defined "the converse cascade effect", i.e. a total quantity of energy which was dissipated owing to inefficient capacity utilization. How saving one watt of energy at the component level of the server provides economy 2.84 watts of energy at the level of an object, 1 watt of the energy dissipated owing to the poor performance of the server can cost 1.95 watts of excess energy costs at the level of an object.
Use of the Cascading Savings Calculator calculator
Managers of DPCs can seize the opportunities of the Cascading Savings Calculator online calculator to learn what impact different elements of strategy of Energy Logic 2.0 can have on their DPC. The user needs to enter only into the corresponding fields the level of loading and effectiveness ratio of use of DPC, and then to adjust the runner according to nine elements to set the level of involvement of these elements of strategy as a percentage. On the basis of these data, the calculator will show how each of nine elements will affect loading, effectiveness ratio and cumulative economy of costs and energy. Strategy elements which can be considered by managers of DPCs include:
- Components with low power consumption
- Highly effective power sources
- Energy management of servers
- Architecture of ICT
- Virtualization and consolidation
- Architecture of power supply
- Management of temperature condition and ventilation
- Regulated cooling
- Cooling of environments of high density
- Using the Cascading Savings Calculator calculator, managers of DPCs can see how this or that element of strategy (in whole or in part) can increase economy of energy and means considerably.
