Oracle Database 12c dashboard, (2015)

DBMS is focused on satisfaction of requirements of the enterprises of the future and will support the exponential growth of amounts of data by means of fast analytical applications, large databases (to hundreds terabyte), the Oracle corporation stated.

Oracle Database will help to increase performance of development processes of DevOps at simultaneous improvement of security due to fast installation and removal of databases, by means of enhanced capabilities of configuring. All this allows to integrate performance of a world class of the optimized hardware and software systems Oracle Exadata with the technology of the connected databases (pluggable database) created by Oracle.

Now these technologies are available in the form of the solution of initial level for industrial databases "from small to the average size", to development and testing within a subscription to Oracle Exadata Express Cloud Service.

2015: There was a beta of Oracle Database 12c of Release 2

On October 28, 2015 the Oracle corporation announced release of the beta of Oracle Database 12c of Release 2.

In Oracle Database 12c Release 2 transition to a cloud environment is in addition simplified, effective providing services of the database is provided and more high density of consolidation works. A system was made more flexibly and more operational regarding administration in cloud scales.

The changes planned in primary partitions of Oracle Database 12c of Release 2:

  • increase in dynamism and expansion of opportunities Oracle Multitenant (multirent architecture of Oracle) — movement in the online mode of the connected databases between servers, data processing centers and Oracle Cloud services.

  • expansion of support for analytics of Big Data of Analytics — along with improvements in Oracle Database In-Memory, is going to improve performance of work with space data and to expand support of the analysis of graphs.

  • hundreds of additional functions — are improved drivers for all main programming languages and platforms. The version contains improvements in all crucial spheres of interest of clients: security, high availability, scalability, performance and controllability.

2014: Oracle Database 12c Release 12.1.0.2

On August 1, 2014 Oracle announced the beginning of sales of the new version of Release 12.1.0.2 Oracle Database 12c DBMS.

The structure of the updated product includes Oracle Database In-Memory technology for support of the enterprise of real time. It helps the organizations to accept more operational and reasonable business solutions due to performance improvement of Oracle applications of Database.

For obtaining valuable analytical information from data, implementations of effective transactions and processes, expansions of opportunities and improvement of customer service quality, the organization develop and use Oracle Database 12c DBMS, including the options Oracle Multitenant and Oracle Database In-Memory.

Oracle Multitenant helps the organizations to consolidate and manage several databases as the single database that promotes growth of efficiency and simplification of management, in combination with the maximum availability. The option Oracle Database In-Memory provided in the new version expands possibilities of Oracle Database 12c, helping the organizations to look for and take from data information in real time, and, along with it, increases transaction performance.

The new version of Oracle Database 12c provides opportunities:

  • application developments with new data types. Thanks to support of JSON (the text interchange format data based on JavaScript) in the new version of Oracle Database 12c of Release 12.1.0.2, the organizations can save data of the documents JSON in the Oracle databases of Database and request them via the traditional SQL and RESTful interfaces.

  • increase database performance and data warehouses. Function of a clustering of attributes allows to guarantee that the connected columns in the database physically remain for access acceleration next to each other.

  • simplify creation of crucial DBaaS of environments. The new feature of Rapid Home Provisioning in Oracle Database 12c simplifies deployment, preparation for work, updating, error correction of the code and service of cloud environments on the basis of databases of multiple lease.

"As cloud environments, mobile devices and the Internet send the increasing amounts of data, the enterprises face need effectively and with the minimum costs them to manage — Andrew Mendelsohn, the executive vice president of division of Oracle Database Server Technologies emphasized. — Clients around the world use Oracle Database 12c together with key options, such as Oracle Multitenant, for consolidation of the databases and providing databases as services as directly at the enterprise, and in a cloud. And thanks to opportunities of the option Oracle Database In-Memory available in the new version of Oracle Database 12c, clients can get at once competitive advantage of the enterprise of real time "a one click of the button"".

Using the DBaaS environments supported by Oracle Database 12c, the companies can improve an indicator of use of server resources and optimize management to databases – when preserving isolation of the database (in terms of accomplishment of transactions) and without the need for making changes in applications.

Improvement of management

The Oracle corporation announced on August 21, 2013: the product Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c provides the integrated management for Oracle Database 12c DBMS.

Regarding performance management of Oracle Database 12c offers the improvements concentrated on optimization of administration of databases and designed to help administrators to make more quickly decisions and to spend less time for the analysis of problems with the purpose to increase service quality and performance of IT.

Functions:

  • the optimized diagnostics — improvements in the module Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM) for operational and anticipatory identification of problems, especially for identification of short-term, passing performance concerns;

  • monitoring of business operations in real time — monitoring of compound business operations, such as batch jobs and ETL transactions (the procedure of extraction, conversion and data loading), with providing the reporting in real time on all SQL-and PL/SQL requests executed within work assignment;

  • the portal of performance Performance Hub — the upgraded web console which gives to administrators the uniform, instant account on performance of all data and the recommendation of programs consultants, such as Active Sessions, I/O, Memory, CPU, Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM), SQL Tuning, Real-Time SQL Monitoring and Active Session History (ASH) Analytics;

  • the new Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Express 12c tool the — the facilitated, simple web focused solution for management of separate databases in use.

New opportunities for deployment and management of "clouds" of databases allow to perform consolidation, standardization, the self-serviced automation and billing at simultaneous cutting of costs for providing the database as services (DBaaS). New features of DBaaS work in Oracle Database of versions 10g above.

Schema as a Service provides the necessary level of consolidation allowing administrators to use several schemes of applications in one database and, thus, to offer "the database as service" to hundreds of users of applications without the need for creation of its numerous copies. Users can execute daily transactions, such as monitoring and backup, via the single console of self-service. The Schema-as-a-service model uses such functions of the database as Resource Manager and Database Vault for isolation of users of "cloud" from each other. All this is complemented with opportunities of accounting and billing which provide information on resource consumption by each user.

Snap Clone — instant cloning of the database — allows administrators to create completely functional copies using function of "copying at record" (Copy-on-Write, CoW) basic level of storage. Users can request these databases via the console of self-service and receive their ready to work within minutes, but not hours that minimizes the needs for storage.

In-Memory optimization

On September 26, 2013 the Oracle corporation announced the optimized business applications of In-Memory Applications with the option Oracle Database In-Memory for Oracle Database 12c which purpose - to increase DBMS performance for accomplishment of analytical tasks, data warehousings, preparation of reports and transaction processing (OLTP).

New Oracle DBMS on low start

Before full start of DBMS of new generation of Oracle 12c there were read weeks and, perhaps, even days, reported on February 1, 2013 the IDG News Service edition. Earlier the corporation reported that the next version of this system will enter the market in 2013, without designating any more specific dates.

A number of the sources of the edition familiar with plans of Oracle and wished to remain unnamed, reported that it 12s will have support first of all to Solaris and Linux. At the same time representatives of Oracle so far did not comment on rumors in any way.

Database 12c was provided at the Oracle OpenWorld conference in 2012, and from the moment of an exit of the previous iteration 11g Release 2 passed more than three years. The main feature of a new system is that it is "vstrayemy" (literally – pluggable) that will allow different bases to be managed by means of one DBMS.

Oracle already gave small odds to the main competitor, SAP while the German company announced that its own new SAP HANA DBMS supports SAP ERP now. Meanwhile, before for the majority of deployments of SAP ERP DBMS from Oracle were used.

Experts believe that Oracle nevertheless will raise the cost of licenses of the new DBMS as the last increase took place in 2008. At the moment the processor license for the enterprises costs $47.5 thousand.

Announcement of Oracle Database 12c

Oracle announced in October, 2012 Oracle Database 12c - "the first-ever utility database management system", - development of which was performed the last several years. The announcement was made by the founder and the head of corporation Larry Ellison within the annual Oracle OpenWorld conference.

Oracle Database 12c is based on "absolutely new architecture", Ellison said during the presentation which will allow clients to take "one selected memory pool, one set of system processes and then to place a set of separate private databases in a uniform container".

"Usually the companies have hundreds and even thousands of separate databases. It causes growth of expenses and eventually becomes very resource-intensive because these databases need to be reserved because you should buy the new hardware in order that to support them", - the InfoWorld edition tells Ellison words.

Kommunalnost (multitenancy, "joint lease") the database management system (DMS) in this plan offers "powerful benefits of efficiency", the head of the company continued. Besides, such DBMS model offers additional benefits in respect of security and efficiency as "kommunalnost" is offered at the level of the database, he explained.

"The connected databases are much more effective in comparison with traditional databases", - Ellison told. He reported that such databases require about 6 times less hardware resources and at the same time work by 5 times more effectively. For example, start of 50 databases will require 3 GB of memory, but not 20 GB of memory, as in standard model.

"Many suppliers of SaaS, "software as service", offer "kommunalnost" at the level of applications, providing such advantages as upgradeability of a great number of clients for time, however "there are problems here", Ellison considers. In particular, he referred to security, instruments of requests and other functions which work incorrectly at the level of applications.

"Oracle 12c is a basis of the extending cloud business of Oracle", - Larry Ellison added during the performance, having explained that the letter "with" in the name of the platform means "cloud" (cloud). The new product is continuation of the strategy implementation of Oracle Cloud provided by Ellison in June, 2012.

The new database management system will be released in 2013. Before the program for its beta testing will be started.
