PowerEdge C8000 series delivers maximum performance across a single chassis, single rack, or even the entire environment. 2017: PowerEdge C4140

Dell PowerEdge C8220, C8220X and C8000XD Supercomputer Servers

Dell developed a new line of the C8220, C8220X and C8000XD servers on the basis of PowerEdge XXX for 10-petaflop supercomputer. The system will be implemented in the Stampede supercomputer at the University of Texas, Austin, starting next year, Computerworld reported on October 8, 2012.

Servers are built on standard Intel x86 processors and can be equipped with graphics processors or additional storage systems to improve task performance for high-performance computing operations and cloud workloads.

"The new solution will allow users to combine graphics processors, storage, memory and other elements inside the server," said Dell Product Manager Armando Acosta. Stampede includes thousands of C8,000 servers with a total of 272 TB of RAM and 14 petabytes of disk space.

The supercomputer will use eight Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors and coprocessors codenamed Knights Corner, which, as explained in, Dell will accelerate scientific and mathematical calculations.

As for the new servers, they are mainly based on the C8220 chassis and can have up to eight blades, each server can contain two processors with support for up to 16 cores, two internal hard drives and additional stored data and network parameters.

"The C8220X, a more advanced model in the new line: has more RAM and storage, and can be equipped with graphics processors. All servers are designed to be used in highly parallel computing environments, "Acosta said.

PowerEdge C8000

The Dell company in October, 2012 began deliveries to the Russian market of server chassis and the PowerEdge C8000 modules. The new Chassis provides the ability to combine compute, storage, GPU, and power supplies in one 4U compact form factor.

The C8000XD PowerEdge Storage Module packs up to 1.4 times the capacity in a 4U rack. This module is suitable for tasks that require flexible capacity expansion (high-performance computing (HPC), Hadoop, and hosting services).

As requirements and tasks change, the C8000 PowerEdge can be reconfigured or scaled to extend the lifecycle and return on IT investment. Installation of new modules will not require replacement of the chassis, which will save money.

2011: PowerEdge C6145

The Dell PowerEdge C6145 2U Rack Server is equipped with the latest AMD Opteron 6000 processors supporting up to two independent 4-socket server nodes, up to 96 processor cores, 1 TB of memory. Each C6145 PowerEdge node is equipped with three PCIe Gen2 x16 slots, an x8 card slot, and a dedicated x16 slot for Host Interface Cards (HICs). The Dell PowerEdge C6145 is compatible with advanced socket-level processors.

Thus, instead of the AMD Opteron 6100 processors, users will be able to install upcoming AMD chips with Interlagos architecture. Interlagos chips, which include up to 16 processor cores, will appear in the third quarter of 2011. Dell PowerEdge C6145 servers can run Linux (RHEL 5.5 and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1), Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64, Hyper-V and HPC x64.

According to SPECfp_rate2006, the new C6145 PowerEdge has the highest performance among x86 2U infrastructure servers (floating point performance at 755 Flops, input rate per PCIe card up to 40 Gb/s).
