CERN operates infrastructure of databases Oracle application

Customers: CERN European center of nuclear researches

Contractors: Oracle
Product: Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c
Second product: NetApp Data ONTAP

Project date: 2013/03  - 2013/09

The scientific organization CERN deployed the solution Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c for infrastructure management of Oracle which includes business applications binding software, databases and the hardware systems, the press service of Oracle reported on July 29, 2013.

Project Background

CERN manages the extensive infrastructure of databases necessary for work of laboratories, accelerators and detectors and also for management of metadata of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The main objective of Oracle Enterprise Manager - monitoring of key components of this infrastructure that is crucial for smooth and effective operation of infrastructure of the CERN databases.

"Our databases play extremely important role in operation of accelerators and when carrying out experiments therefore, reliability is the compulsory provision for us. Optimization of infrastructure of Oracle is also important as we should support the growing amounts of data at the fixed budgets. We need to have an opportunity to perform automatic check of compliance of configurations and anticipatory management of our environment for rapid response to emergency situations which can arise — Tony Cass, the head of group of services of databases (Database Services Group) of IT department of CERN emphasized. — Oracle Enterprise Manager executes monitoring of different components of our infrastructure and, notifying on any system events before they can become a problem, allows us to find more time for support and granting new opportunities to our users".

Project Progress

CERN manages more than 3 thousand objects among which there are more than 200 subjects of Oracle Database, more than 50 subjects of Oracle Real Application Clusters and more than 200 copies of Oracle WebLogic Server and also automates tasks of management of lifecycle and configurations (including control of security policies) and provides management and setup of the CERN installation, using Oracle Enterprise Manager.

"Connect the deep and old relations with the European Organization for Nuclear Research of Oracle. Infrastructure of the CERN databases with its strict requirements to IT automation was the successful environment for deployment of Oracle Enterprise Manager therefore a number of the advanced functions which are used today by many clients was implemented. Oracle Enterprise Manager contributes significantly to achievement of goals of the organization for ensuring compliance to standards, reduction of time for daily IT transactions and a downtime thanks to anticipatory monitoring — noted Kumar (Sushil Kumar), the vice president of Oracle for product strategy and business development (Product Strategy and Business Development) Dried. — Helping IT department of CERN to increase efficiency, we give to the organization the chance to find more time of the main mission — to scientific research".
