Idle time of DPC

According to data of the research Ponemon Institute minute of idle time of a data processing center in the USA on average costs 7908 dollars (the research is financed by Vertiv company (before Emerson Network Power)). And this amount will only grow over time. For example, in 2010 minute of idle time was 5617 US dollars^[1].

The research was conducted in 67 DPCs (data centers were in the different industries), the average area of the studied DPCs made 232 square meters. Losses from idle time were estimated, both direct, and indirect taking into account data loss, a stop of business processes, failure of the equipment and even loss of customer confidence.

The greatest losses were sustained by commercial data centers a business model which it is constructed on provision of services of data center the to clients. For example, only because of one case losses of DPC made 1.7 million US dollars. Researchers note that in recent years the quantity of cases of idle time was slightly reduced that says that the industry in recent years pays attention to questions of reliability of infrastructure of DPC and continuous work. However idle time cost, alas, grew and is considerable (for 41% percent) that says that business is more and more started on IT of technology and failure of one physical resource leads to blow to the bigger number of clients.

• Failure of the block of air conditioning in server (30 percent)
• UPS hardware failure (27 percent)
• Failure in the system of distribution of power supply, PDU and operation of the time cut-out (26 percent)

These researches:

• 91% of the polled owners of data centers and operators of DPC noted that within 24 months there were failures in work of DPC. For comparison in 2010 this digit was 95%;
• the average time of idle time of DPC was 86 minutes. For comparison in 2010 this digit made 97 minutes;
• the average cost of idle time was 690204 US dollars. For comparison in 2010 this digit made 505502 US dollars
