RIA Novosti prepares IT infrastructure for the Winter Olympic Games

On January 14, 2014 the Technoserv company reported: the project of upgrade of computing IT infrastructure of RIA Novosti is complete.

Project Tasks

"The Russian agency of the international information of RIA Novosti by the solution of the International Olympic Committee was given the statuses national a host agency and a national photopool of XXII Winter Olympic games of 2014 in Sochi. The honourable status confers on news agency considerable responsibility for the most complete information covering of Games for the Russian media. On sports arenas and the open areas for press photographers and photo editors the remote jobs connected to infrastructure of RIA Novosti – for operational transfer and processing of media data will be created. For secured provision of high availability of these materials in the conditions of peak load, for reduction of time of processing and data transmission through services of news agency, their long-term storage it was necessary to upgrade beforehand existing hardware and software system, computing and network resources of RIA Novosti", – Sergey Ganin, the head of directorate of information technologies of RIA Novosti told.

Project Progress

Works are carried out within preparation of RIA Novosti for fulfillment of duties national a host agency and a national photopool of XXII Winter Olympic games of 2014 to Sochi.

The storage system and distribution of a multimedia content of data is upgraded and expanded. Technoserv performed a complex of works, including delivery, setup and installation of the new equipment, its integration into the existing hardware and software system and the subsequent testing.

Upgrade of the storage system and distribution of a multimedia content of RIA Novosti constructed on Hi-End disk arrays of the class IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 was expressed in double increase in capacity of a storage system and increase in capacity of corporate network up to 10 Gbps (for performance improvement and ensuring availability of computing infrastructure).

For overcoming the predicted surges in hard work with the stored data and increases in power capacity of the IBM XIV Storage System system total amount a cache memory of the first level is increased, disk Flash-drives for the subsequent use in quality a cache memory of the second level are added. Use of technology of virtualization of VMware increased reliability of all infrastructure, scalability, flexibility and stability, simplified performance management of information systems and runtime allocation of loading.

"Now IT infrastructure of RIA Novosti is prepared for the predicted growth of loading and significant increase in volume of the stored data within the upcoming Olympic events. The selected solutions allow to provide high availability and reliability of information resources of RIA Novosti, guaranteeing their working capacity even in case of failure of separate components of infrastructure. Computing resources of news agency were upgraded and consolidated thanks to what it was succeeded to reach reduction of time and finance costs on modification and deployment of new IT services and also to provide the level of availability, necessary for accomplishment of an important task, and reliability of IT infrastructure", – Sergey Korneev, the chairman of the Technoserv advisory board noted.
