Cargo transportation by the inland water transport (market of Russia)

According to the research DISCOVERY Research Group the market share of cargo transportation by the inland water transport at the end of 2012 made only 1.7% in a total amount of transportation of goods and 1.6% in the general goods turnover of Russia. In kind the volume of cargo transportation by the inland water transport at the end of 2012 was 142 million t. that is 12.2% higher than an indicator of 2011. Goods turnover - 81 billion t-km. that is 35.9% higher in comparison with 2011.

2013

According to the results of the I half-year 2013 the volume of cargo transportation on the inland Russian Federation water transport was reduced by 5.4% in comparison with a similar indicator of 2012 and was 105.7 million t. However in general, according to forecasts of experts, at the end of 2013 the volume of freight transportation on internal waterways will remain at the level of 2012.

Experts assume that the introduced restrictions for transportation of goods on federal highways with trucks weighing over 12 t. and also rise in price of rates of railway cargo transportation, with simultaneous participation of the state in renewal of the fleet and development of river port infrastructure will make river transport the good alternative allowing to perform the most profitable cargo transportation in the nearest future.

Emphasizing the interest in development of this segment of the market of cargo transportation, the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation by fall of 2013 prepared and submitted the strategy of development of the inland Russian Federation water transport till 2030. According to this strategy, the consolidated growth of cargo base of the inland water transport when implementing the innovation scenario of development of economy can be up to 298 million t. by 2030, at the conservative scenario - up to 205 million t., i.e., respectively, by 2.1 times and 1.4 times is higher in comparison with 2012.
