MDM Bank completes the second stage of upgrade of DWH the solution of IBM

On February 12, 2014 IBM also MDM Bank announced project completion of upgrade of IT infrastructure of bank on the platform IBM Storwize 7000 and IBM Flash System.

Project Tasks

Growth of the customer base of MDM Bank and the number of transactions significantly increased load of the automated banking system. The high competition in the banking sector, regulatory rules and the firm schedule of an exit of releases of functionality the core banking system, impose high requirements to reliability and performance of business and critical applications of bank, such as RBO and IBSO. Considering these factors the decision on upgrade of information infrastructure of bank is made.

"Stabilization of key banking systems to external risks, including natural and technogenic cataclysms using replication of data in the reserve data processing center (DPC) on the selected storage system (SS) was a main goal of the project. At the same time on the speed of work of the main banking systems the complex should not have conceded to the solution of the class High-End set in the main DPC, - Elliot Goykhman, CIO of MDM Bank noted. - In addition to work of the key systems of bank also ensuring work more than ten full-scale development environments was required. All this imposed even more performance requirements and scalabilities of a complex at the cost for terabyte at the level of the class Mid-Range".

Project Progress

MDM Bank stopped the choice on the complete solution of IBM consisting of DWH of the middle class of IBM StorWize V7000 of 400 TB, superfast specialized DWH of IBM Flash System constructed for Flash-memories.

The important feature of the set complex - a possibility of redistribution of resources without stopping of work that allows to use in the normal mode all resources of performance under development and testing, and in case of failure immediately to transfer resources to service of requests of the core banking system.

Project Results

Project implementation using technologies of IBM helped MDM Bank to provide disaster tolerance of key information systems of bank – RBO and IBSO, to reduce time for creation of a test environment and also practically to lift limits for quantity of test environments that considerably increases efficiency of application development.

Energy consumption of systems is reduced by 22 KW, are released expensive with firmness - places in DPC of bank. Payback of the project for 70% - due to removal from operation and removal from technical support of the substituted equipment.

The project is implemented by forces of IT department of MDM Bank and specialists of IBM. It is complete in the fourth quarter 2013.

The second project phase

On September 18, 2014 it became known of continuation of the project of optimization of IT infrastructure of bank.

During the second stage of the project it was necessary to provide the economic platform for critical applications of bank:

• system of issuance of credits,
• processing systems,
• systems for collectors,
• CRM.

The project required to optimize TCO of the current infrastructure, to accelerate report generation.

"The complete solution of IBM consisting of DWH of IBM Storwize and also superfast specialized DWH of IBM FlashSystem which is completely constructed for Flash-memories perfectly proved based on the first stage of the large-scale project on implementation of protection against accidents of key core banking systems RBO and IBSO and also to creation of infrastructure for several tens development environments and testing — Elliot Goykhman, CIO of MDM Bank noted. — Considering successful experience of implementation of the first stage of the project, we stopped the choice on solutions of IBM and for providing the following part of the project".

Project implementation increases storage capacity by 1.7 times. Performance improvement made from 40% to 600% for different tasks, customer representatives noted. As a result of reduction of quantity it is resistant - places in DPC, the space occupied by the solution decreased five times.

Electricity consumption by DPC decreased by 20 kW, in comparison with earlier period of operation. A system can be scaled on the capacity and performance more than four times, so, is capable to provide the potential growth of business of bank.

In the project the complete solution of IBM consisting of DWH of IBM Storwize (275 TB), superfast specialized DWH of IBM FlashSystem (20 TB) is used.
