Reliable power supply for the largest operator of satellite TV: the most flexible expansion taking into account business growth

Task

The task set for Enkom company was caused by active increase in a subscriber base of Tricolor TV. There was an urgent need to provide regular power supply of the server premises which is responsible for maintenance of process of billing of services according to the scheme of reservation N+1 with a power of 45 kVA, and that the most important - to consider at the same time the further growth of energy consumption.

Technical solution for this project had to have not only high rates of efficiency and reliability, but also to be the scalablest and flexible. For National Satellite Company it was important to have further an opportunity of installation of the additional hardware without power supply shutdown.

The list of the essential requirements imposed to the planned equipment included also compactness – technical solution had to fit into structure of server and to be placed in cabinets 800х800 server standards.

Solution

For the solution of an assigned task the modular uninterruptible power supply units (UPSU) of Eaton 9355 8-15 of quarter with technology of double conversion of tension were selected. The UPS this model became the optimal choice, having provided the maximum level of protection and a progressive tense of independent operation - in modern compact design.

In 2011 on an object the first two Eaton UPSes 15 kVA with reservation 1+1 were installed. In 2012 expansion of a system to the final power of two UPSes of similar model was carried out. Before delivery of the systems of National Satellite Company the equipment passed complete test in the service center "Enkom". It allowed to reduce time and to avoid unforeseen situations when carrying out commissioning on an object.

Eaton 9355 UPSes differ in compact design: it gives the chance to save a valuable space of server rooms and data processing centers. Thanks to the maximum compactness of data of the UPS and special constructions developed by Enkom company, the equipment was placed vertically in cabinets of server standard 800×800 that allowed to save the area for the additional hardware in case of need of further expansion.

The unique Hot Sync® technology from Eaton allowed to integrate multimodular configurations in a parallel without use of communication wires between them. Thus, due to elimination of a possibility of failures at the level of communication wires the maximum availability of a power supply is provided and the uniform "point of failure" of a system (a lack of traditional parallel systems) is excluded

Thanks to use of this technology four set on an object of the UPS were united in a parallel according to scheme N+1 that allowed to distribute an ultimate load between them and to provide absolute protection of power supply as the Hot Sync® system carries out internal diagnostics of the equipment and isolates the failed module, and an overall load instantly is accepted by the remained modules.

The Hot Sync technology can be also applied to creation of the scalable parallel systems considering a possibility of increase in power of the protected loading in the future.

In addition to above-mentioned advantages, in the Eaton 9355 UPS the technology of a three-stage charge ABM® using which the UPS constantly traces a status of batteries is implemented, optimizes a charging interval and prodlevakt the term of their service to 50%.

Result

The Enkom company performed works on ensuring high-quality power supply of the server premises of "turnkey" National Satellite Company – since a design stage and finishing with commissioning of the equipment Eaton.

The works on upgrade of a system necessary in connection with the active growth of business were performed without shutdown of server. It allowed National Satellite Company not to move billing process to other platform, and, thus, to avoid time and finance costs. Besides, the whole set of possible combinations of the installed equipment and further development server – as in terms of increase in power, and increase in battery life was offered.
