SAP Sailing Analytics

During the prestigious race of the international Extreme Sailing Series series which stage in the last dates of June, 2014 for the first time passed in Russia the SAP company held the presentation of own development of SAP Sailing Analytics — an analytical system for sailing. Similar solutions are used also in other sports, including soccer^[1].

The idea of creation of an analytical system for sailing appeared in 2011 when the SAP company supported one of regattas which passed in Germany. As under the created solution there was already a ready platform, solution development did not take a lot of time. In 2012 the SAP company became the partner of a world series of races on catamarans of Extreme Sailing Series.

"The SAP Sailing Analytics system processes different information — about wind, about currents, speed and a trajectory of the movement of participants. This information arrives from sensors which are located on catamarans and anchor buoys. As a result commentators, organizers and the audience can see in more detail how there takes place the race, and its participants after the end of competitions to analyze the actions" — Milan Cherni, the expert of SAP in Sailing Analytics told.

The technology platform of SAP HANA formed a basis for the solution presented in St. Petersburg. An analytical system in itself for sailing is one of direction branches on development of HANA solutions for logistics management and tracking of a status of motor and railway transport on the basis of information from sensors. "This direction very wide, and SAP application of Sailing Analytics is a private example of how HANA can process data from sensors and in real time to visualize the processed information" — Sergey Kuzin, the architect of business solutions of SAP CIS says.

A similar analytical system was used for training of German national team for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. For the first time about the similar system which is already working in TSG Hoffenheim club of the first division of Bundesliga, representatives of SAP told this spring at the CEBIT exhibition in Hanover. Information came to this system approximately from 400 sensors. At trainings players put on the sensors tracing them movements across the field and other parameters. The ball is equipped with sensors too. The purpose of application of analytics not prediction of results of matches, is emphasized in SAP, and improvement of play of the team. The same can be told also about business — if to rely on an intuition, but not on the facts, then it is possible to come to incorrect conclusions concerning efficiency of these or those methods of work.
