2016: RunOS 0.6

On November 15, 2016 TsPIKS company announced release of Open Source of the version of the Russian controller for management of SDN networks.

Use of domestic switches for SDN networks

Changes by means of which the speed of operation of the controller is increased are made to the version of RunOS 0.6, application development for management of networks is simplified.

The open version of the controller has the basis identical with API, as the commercial version therefore potential customers have an opportunity to learn to develop applications for SDN networks.

In release of RunOS 0.6 the structure of a core of the controller is updated that helped to save performance (8M of events per second). RunOS has no binding to the specific version of the OpenFlow protocol now that expanded possibilities of use of the functionality specific to the equipment.

Development of network applications for SDN networks became simpler. The basic functionality of RunOS gives the chance to create network topology, position fixes of hosts, to organize a route through all network, has Rest API compatible to OpenFlow Floodlight and Ryu controllers. The controller has the user-friendly graphical interface for monitoring of loading of network devices, viewing tables and adding or removal of rules. Detailed documentation of Runos-book on operation of the controller and the instruction for development of new applications is added.

For us as for the research organization, one of main objectives of development of own controller consisted in simplification of development of network applications and providing to developers new high-level programming models of SDN networks which would hide all low-level parts of the OpenFlow protocol and restriction of a switching equipment. The main objective – to create a new class of the network programmers conceiving in terms of network management as a uniform object. We are sure that development of such open source of the project will allow to create quickly community of application developers for SDN networks in Russia and also will allow to advance domestic developments in foreign markets.

For November 14, 2016 commercial sale of the RunOS controller passes tests in technical laboratory Rostelecom for participation in pilot projects. It is set in SDN- laboratories IBS Interlab.

2014: RUNOS

The Center of Application Studies of Computer Networks (CASCN) announced creation of the controller of the program configured RUNOS networks (Russian networks operation systems). The source code of the controller is uploaded publicly on Github service. Third-party developers can create on its basis applications on flexible management by resources of corporate network, on security management on the basis of any corporate the politician, on integration management of a wired and wireless network, etc.[1]

The difference program configured (SDNsoftware-defined networking) networks from traditional consists that in SDN network the topology is defined by the controller, and all devices work at the basis of rules which continuously receive from it. In traditional network each router is configured irrespective of others and independently defines routes of transfer of packets according to the rules that conducts to additional costs as in the financial, and human plan.

On survey results of J'son & Partners Consulting as of August-September, 2014 the most part of the largest Russian operators (more than 70%) of mobile and fixed connection was at a stage of studying and the analysis of opportunities of SDN (along with technology of virtualization of network functions — Network Function Virtualization, NFV). On a test stage of technologies — more than a half of operators. The vast majority of the polled Russian operators considers that implementation of SDN/NFV technologies on commercial network will take place in the next 2-3 years, i.e. in 2016 — 2017. About 7% of respondents consider that it will occur following 2015.

Among the main technical characteristics of RUN OS processing speed at the level of 30 million flows per second, time for installation of new connection — 45 microsec, support of 1 thousand switches, management from the graphical interface is stated. According to TsPIKS, in RUN OS balancing of loading, the approved vision of all network, work with the distributed network applications, security and counteraction to external loadings are implemented.

Developers assure that for fall of 2014 it is the fastest SDN controller in the world. Its performance is reached due to use of opportunities of multicore and multiple processor systems. A set of network applications — as from the world of traditional networks, and new is involved in it: L2/L3 routing taking into account service quality, multistream routing, traffic filtering, work with network protocols (ARP, DNS, DHCP, BGP), broadcast of the addresses (NAT), balancing of loading, virtualization of networks, anti-DDoS, verification of network, integration with a management system of DPC.

RUNOS first of all is focused on a corporate segment. Its consumer audience in TsPIKS see network administrators and engineers of DPC, telecom operators, service providers and also pupils in the "network technologies" direction, researchers in the field of computer networks and developers of perspective network technologies.

TsPIKS assure that the RUN OS controller was developed after studying about thirty existing controllers working under the OpenFlow protocol (the main protocol for control of switches and routers in SDN networks) among which there are solutions Cisco, IBM, HP, NEC.

Concerning the solutions NOX, POX, Beacon, Floodlight, MuL, Maestro and Ryu the Russian developers carried out direct comparison, but assure that on performance level their product exceeds all competitors without exception.

"We tested the controllers uploaded publicly as controllers of business companies are not available to us. But most the known vendors are based on the controllers which are in open access which passed through our analysis" — the TSPIX leading programmer-researcher Alexander Shalimov reported CNews.

In Russia as assure of TsPIKS, similar developments do not exist.

The center notes that just yesterday the The Wall Street Journal edition announced emergence of the new software on the basis of SDN — Open Network Operating System (ONOS). "This solution is based on the Floodlight OpenFlow controller which participated in experimental comparison with our controller" — Shalimov says. According to him, the test showed that by key criteria (performance, delays, reliability, security) it concedes to RUNOS. "ONOS is more directed to distributed control by network and can be integrated with any controller, including with ours", - the expert adds.

Until the end of the year TsPIKS is going to place completely in a public access the solution which will combine in itself properties of all three versions.

TsPIKS refer to the research IDC according to which in the next four years the world market of network equipment and the corresponding applications for SDN will grow on average for 89.4% a year. By 2018 its volume will exceed $8 billion. At the same time Gartner included technology of program control by network in Top-10 of strategic technology trends of 2014.

TsPIKS positions itself as the non-commercial research project on creation of technologies and products for computer networks of new generation. The center is a resident of an IT cluster Skolkovo (received one million i200 order as a grant). Besides TsPIKS became the winner of tenders of Rostelecom (on one million i21.6), the Ministry of Education and Science (on i5 of one million and on one million i40) and also Intel and EMC (the amounts do not reveal).

On September 30 the current year TsPIKS registered two business companies for promotion and sale of the solutions. The WiMark Systems company will be engaged in creation of vendoronezavisimy Wi-Fi-solutions for centralized operation in wireless networks — for operators, system integrators, Enterprise-clients and small offices. The second NFWare company is a producer of high-performance solutions on the basis of NFV technology.

In 2013 the development team of TsPIKS passed a training in the Stanford university in Open Networks Laboratory where was engaged in studying of different methods of increase in speed of operation of OpenFlow-controllers.
