2019: Start of a system of face recognition when landing aboard the plane
In the middle of September, 2019 the London Gatvik became the first airport of Great Britain which confirmed that it will constantly use the system of face recognition for check of the personality before landing of passengers in airplanes.
Such decision was made on the basis of the pilot project with independent landing of passengers which is carried out in 2018 in cooperation with EasyJet company. More than 90% of the polled passengers said that they consider this technology extremely simple in use, and the pilot project proved that face recognition accelerates landing and considerably reduces waiting time of passengers.
Gatvik is going to carry out one more testing to the next half a year, and in 2022 to implement technology of automatic landing to eight exits in the Northern terminal. Nevertheless, passengers all the same should undergo testing of baggage through a safety zone. Besides, they will need to scan the passport at the boarding gate that a system could compare the photo with the actual person inside.
However such solution will limit Gatvik's possibilities to use face recognition for other services. For example, at the Chinese airport of Chengdu to Shuanl a system which automatically provides to travelers up-to-date information about their runs when they approach the screen was installed recently. This innovation became possible thanks to the fact that passengers provide the passports at earlier stage.
Gatvik's press secretary said that this technology corresponds to all laws on data protection, and passengers will be able to select a method of check of paport when landing — personnel or using the system of face recognition. Data of passengers will not be stored — they will leave in several seconds after check of the personality.[1]
