PM-8QAM

PM-8QAM is the technology of optimization of use of capacity of optical fiber offered by Infinera company capable to expand possibilities of the existing underwater backbone networks worldwide.

According to statements of vendor, PM-8QAM provides increase in capacity of optical fiber by 50% in comparison with the most widespread technology of the quadrature phase manipulation with polarizing multiplexing (Polarization Multiplexed 8 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, PM-QPSK) used usually in similar implementations.

PM-8QAM is tested in network segment of Reach North Asia Loop

On January 23, 2015 Infinera and Telstra companies announced demonstration of technology of superchannels of the next generation for underwater backbone networks - she is capable to increase the capacity of one fiber optic connection by 50%.

Testing was held within segment F of Reach North Asia Loop (RNAL) network 2200 km long. also showed possibilities of PM-8QAM technology, work of advanced formats of modulation of FlexCoherent and technologies of reception-transmission of an optical signal for postprocessing.

According to Infinera developers, superchannels are capable to solve three fundamental problems^[1]:

• Scaling of bandwidth without scaling of volume of operational procedures
• Optimization of range and performance of DWDM networks
• Support of high-speed services of the next generation

Moreover, implementation of technology of superchannels is possible even based on the existing acceptances of design of DWDM networks, without expecting long-term development of technologies.

Superchannels will help to provide performance over 100 Gbps, but at the same time sending range of a signal therefore approach using several bearing will become logical option should remain. The principle of flexible consecutive modulation (FlexCoherent) – an important element which will help to achieve an effective objective.
