TsKP of D.I. Mendeleyev uses ROSA Desktop.Fresh OS for local data processing

On February 18, 2015 it became known of use of ROSA Desktop Fresh OS in operation of computing systems of the Center of collective use of D.I. Mendeleyev (TsKP).

Project Tasks

In TsKP of Mendeleyev devices, for the analysis of structure of samples — the chromatograph, the spectrophotometer, atomic and absorbing and IK-Fourier spectrometers, the mass-spectrometer with inductively connected plasma, an electron microscope and others are used. Each of the devices assuming software processing operations of the obtained data is usually delivered with own software. Moreover, quite often with the device the computer with the installed programs — is delivered directly at the device cost in several million rubles, the computer can be considered as the small periphery.

Project Results

"Inconveniences, of course, are available — Denis Silakov, the expert of "STC IT of a ROSA" noted. — For example, for prevention of infection of crucial machines with viruses these machines are not connected to the Internet, and results of measurements are transferred to users on not re-recorded CD disks (any USB sticks!). However at the moment employees are ready to be reconciled with these inconveniences. Nevertheless, there is other factor opening to the Linux distribution kits the road to TsKP and similar organizations. The matter is that research consists not only in removal of measurements using some device, but also in the subsequent analysis of results. Suppliers of devices provide applications for carrying out such analysis, however not always they convenient, and is normal also not free. Therefore the law-abiding scientist should or process results by the same machine where he received them (and to take time of the expensive equipment), or to buy to itself the separate license. However results of measurements usually represent a heap of digits or pictures which can be transferred to other machine and to process, than it is necessary for soul. On our personal example we tried to use the ROSA Desktop Fresh distribution kit for data processing and we want to share information on some interesting applications from its repositories".
