April 29, 2015. The IBM company reported[1] about creation of a hybrid cloud solution for the Maryinsky Theater which provides access to online broadcasts of the concerts and performances which are taking place on theater platforms for judges of art worldwide. The solution works both with browsers for desktop computers, and with mobile devices and tablets.

Goals and Objectives

Earlier Maryinsky Theater for broadcast of performances used own local technology. Concerts, opera and ballet settings were removed, edited and shown to hundreds of the viewers from own server of theater. For increase in online audience the Maryinsky Theater looked for new more reliable solution which could make viewing broadcastings for users more convenient. The solution also had to have flexibility to sustain any peak load of the website when video are at the same time watched by thousands of people.

Result

Cloud computing of IBM gives to the Maryinsky Theater the chance to cope with peak loads almost instantly. Based on cloud infrastructure of IBM SoftLayer the theater has big flexibility for broadcast of video reviews. Also it managed to reduce by 30% of a delay in reproduction of performances and concerts. The solution of IBM will allow to cope with increase in number of the audience, especially when watching popular videos, for example, of orchestra concerts under control of the maestro Valery Gergiev, speeches of the famous world pianists and the Creative workshop of young choreographers during the ballet festival of the Maryinsky Theater.

For customers, such as Maryinsky Theater, digital transformation requires implementation of hybrid cloud solutions which would combine public and private elements, had flexibility in the choice and change of environments, data and services, noted in IBM. Clients have an opportunity to create different applications and services, saving at the same time the operational level of monitoring, management and security.

"For a scope of the growing global audience of theater we looked for a scalable and hybrid cloud solution which would conform not only to our quality standards, but also expectations of the audience — Evgeny Barbashin, the head of department of computer technologies of the Maryinsky Theater told. — We tested different competitive offers from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, but the audience had difficulties with buffering at video streaming. We stopped the choice on IBM Cloud which completely meets our requirements in terms of reliability of work and ease of use".
