Population

2023: 1.66 million people, of whom a record 23% are foreigners

Barcelona has a population of 1.66 million, of which 76.4% are Spanish citizens and 23.6% are foreigners, according to the latest census. This is the highest percentage of foreign residents in the history of the city.

Almost half of Barcelona residents aged 20-39 are not Spanish citizens. The new statistic, released in January 2024, was further proof that Barcelona is the country's most international city.

2022: Barcelona records record number of centenarians with 931 over 100

According to the Municipal Padron des Habitanes, as of January 1, 2022, 931 people over the age of 100 lived in the capital of Catalonia. This is as much as 32.4% more than six years ago. Despite the death rate during the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure continues to grow. Curiously, 83% of Barcelona's centenarians are women, and Eixample and Sant Gervasi-Galvany are areas of centenarians.

But not only can Barcelona boast of life expectancy, but so can all of Spain. In recent decades, the number of centenaries of the country has increased 20 times.

2014: Number of foreigners decreased by 5,345 to 262,000

According to the results of 2014, for the fourth year in a row, the foreign population of Barcelona is decreasing. In 2014, there were 5,345 fewer foreigners living in the Catalan capital, according to the Barcelona Statistics Department. Barcelona has become a city with a very large migration "turnover": it attracts a large number of foreigners, but leaves it even more often. People are returning to their homeland or emigrating to another country in search of better working conditions and affordable housing.

At the end of 2014, 262,233 foreigners lived in Barcelona - 16.3% of the total population of the city. In 2014, 50 of Barcelona's 73 districts saw a decline in the foreign population. Raval is in first place in terms of the loss of foreigners - minus 543 people.

Representatives of 166 nationalities live in Barcelona. As before, the most common diaspora is Italian (25,707 people). In second place are Pakistanis (19,414), and in third place are Chinese (17,487). This is followed by the French (13,281) and Moroccans (12,601). The Chinese community increased more than others - by 1,052 people. The number of immigrants from Ecuador (by 2202), Peru (1772), Bolivia (1661) and Colombia (1204) has noticeably decreased. Latin Americans Are Returning to Their Home Countries[1].

Museums

Museum of Forbidden Art

The Museum of Forbidden Art (Museu de l'Art Prohibit) opened in Barcelona on October 26, 2023, which presents censored works. The collection was based on the collection of the Catalan media mogul Tacho Beneta. It has more than two hundred paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs.

For several years, Bennett collected and bought back art objects that were censored for political, social, or religious reasons. For example, the Museum of Forbidden Art displays the scandalous exhibit of the Spanish sculptor Eugenio Merino "Franco Forever" (2012). Among the artists represented are Francisco Goya, Gustav Klimt, Ai Weiwei, Banksy, Zoya Falkova (a modern artist from Kazakhstan) and others.

REC Cultural - Urban Social Currency

In September 2022, Barcelona unveiled REC Cultural, a new type of social currency aimed at encouraging local spending. Since September 1, Barcelona has launched a project that aims to encourage people to spend more money on cultural events, support local businesses and create strong connections between residents.

REC (Real Economy Currency) Cultural is a social currency used in conjunction with the euro in participating institutions using the application.

Between 1 September 2022 and 28 February 2023, a pilot project by Barcelona City Council will allocate €200,000 in currency for use in shops, community centres and museums in the Sants and Pobloh Sec areas.

Initially, 500 local families using social services will receive a check for 200 REC, and the rest of the funds will be distributed in the form of prizes to everyone who wants to visit cultural sites.

Dozens of establishments have already signed up for the project, and anyone who downloads the app will be able to exchange their euros for REC, receiving a bonus of 50% of the amount.

The purpose of the currency is based on "stimulating consumption, production and access to local culture."

In fact, the project was launched back in 2018 as part of the European BMincome scheme, when vulnerable families were provided with RECs for local spending. Over 14 months, 789,592 RECs were put into circulation and the results were promising, with an inter-enterprise recycling rate of 33.4% and government spending increasing by an impressive 54%.

Using REC as an alternative currency should "make it easier to find money in the area with the aim of developing local economies and relationships between the local community and increasing the economic and social viability of the areas," the developers said.

History

2022: Actions to support Russia's special operation in Ukraine

In September 2022, in Barcelona, painted the walls and doors of the Center for Assistance to Ukraine in the letters Z.

The Z symbol is applied to the equipment of the Russian army, which is used in a special operation in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Telegram channels report that the Z symbol also appeared on the surrounding houses and pillars.

In October 2022, some woman decided to flick the flag of Ukraine at a communist rally in Barcelona. The pro-Russian Spaniards did not appreciate this act and pushed her away.

The Spaniards began to draw Z on the streets of Barcelona after the Ukrainians insulted the newlyweds from the Russian Federation.

In addition, after Ukrainian migrants insulted Russian newlyweds at the consulate in Barcelona, the Spaniards began to paint the letter Z everywhere and apply anti-Nazi slogans.

The newlyweds did not pay attention to the migrants and kept smiles on their faces. After the incident, the letter Z appeared on the streets of Barcelona, which became an unofficial symbol of Russia's special operation in Ukraine.
