The institute of archeology and ethnography used the satellite Internet for data exchange with scientific community

On August 6, 2015 the Orion Express company announced project implementation of installation of the small satellite terrestrial station (VSAT) in the Denisovy cave, on site archeological excavations where remains of the most ancient person are found. Project orderer Institute of archeology and ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAET Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science).

Project Tasks

Due to the international importance of the scientific work which is carried out by archeologists, the IAET Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science stationary archaeological camp on site of excavation had a need for regular Internet communications. Geographical features of location of a cave, in particular remoteness from localities and absence in the district of cellular towers, made impossible application of the Internet 3G, 4G, solutions broadband access.

Project Progress

By request of scientists in the Denisovy cave the equipment of VSAT of Orion Express company which provided employees with access to the bilateral high-speed Internet for studying of the found fragments and information exchange with the international scientific community is installed and brought into operation.

By means of technological capabilities of the VSAT platform of the operator, the satellite Internet is the only solution meeting two main requirements of the customer:

• providing uninterrupted signal
• mobility.

If necessary, the station can be reinstalled on other object.

Project Results

VSAT "Orion Express" began provision of services in April, 2014. The high-speed double-sided satellite Internet is provided on the basis of technical solutions from company Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes) (USA) - one of the prime world vendors in a segment of the Internet of VSAT. A signal the VSAT platform of Orion Express guaranteeing high-speed acceptance and transfer of traffic via the space Horizons-2 satellite (85 ° EL) with the territory of a covering – the European part provides the Russian Federation, the Urals and Siberia.

"VSAT is most relevant in regions where the network of mobile operators is absent or works poorly, and there are no traditional communications for the wire Internet or their laying of economic is inexpedient. Our project allowed archeologists to take advantages of the high-speed Internet to interaction with colleagues worldwide. Connection took place using traditional technical solutions which are sufficient for uninterrupted giving of a signal", - Maria Zhilina, the deputy general the director of Orion Express noted.
