2015: Once the most powerful supercomputer is stopped because of explosions in China
On August 13, 2015 the Tianhe-1A supercomputer designed by the National university of defense technologies of the People's Republic of China was switched-off because of explosions in the city of Tianjin where the powerful computing system is located.
According to the Xinhua agency with reference to Liu Guangming, the director of the National supercomputer center in Tianjin in which there is Tianhe-1A after the taken place explosions a system worked regularly, however for the purpose of security it was disconnected. The supercomputer and databases did not suffer, mister Guangming assured, having noted that the room where there is an equipment, has the strengthened protection.
On August 12, 2015 at 11:30 p.m. local time in Tianjin two explosions with a difference in 30 seconds took place. Dangerous substances of the logistic company in the container terminal exploded. The blast wave beat out glasses and doors in buildings standing close by and also destroyed a part of ceilings in the National supercomputer center.
According to preliminary data, state of emergency about 50 people claimed the lives, more than 700 were wounded. Huge damages which are assessed at hundreds of millions dollars are caused to the multimillion megalopolis.
The Tianhe-1A supercomputer has performance at the level of 2.57 petaFLOPS that allowed it to become the most powerful computing system in 2010 (it held leadership till June, 2011). About $88 million were spent for its development. As of June, 2015 Tianhe-1A takes the 24th place in the rating of the fastest computing systems of the world of top500. His leader is the successor of Tianhe-1A — Tianhe-2.
