Higher School of Economics National Research University upgraded access control in the Internet

On September 1, 2015 the company "Jet Infosystems" announced an implementation project of an end-to-end system of dynamic access control in Internet on the platform of products Jet Subscriber Manager and Procera Networks PacketLogic by request of the National research university Higher School of Economics (Higher School of Economics National Research University).

Project Tasks

"Our most large-scale platform – the distributed Moscow campus except educational administrative buildings including the large hostels placed in the Odintsovo district and several hostels in Moscow. Students and teachers can go on-line from any point of the university, territories of educational administrative buildings and hostels, – Oleg Scherbakov, the director of information technology of Higher School of Economics National Research University told. – For us it is important to provide not just Internet access to all users, and access for each employee or student to Internet services with the guaranteed parameters. Traffic management in hostels – is especially relevant where three and more connections, and users – more than 6.5 thousand often are the share of the user. It is simple to understand what happens to bandwidth in peak hours when most of students approximately in at one time return from occupations. For management of a situation the tool providing personal authorization, qualitative analysis of traffic using to it corresponding the politician (including restrictions) and its equitable distribution is necessary. Even understanding of how the device works in network, significantly expands opportunities on permission of incidents, for example, at wireless access. Also the solution is necessary for increase in security of corporate network at the attacks from within".

Project Progress

At the first stage system implementation was carried out on two main Internet access channels from corporate network of educational and administrative buildings and one channel organized on three buildings of a complex of hostels in the Odintsovo district. Works took about three months. Experts of Jet Infosystems company created a rule set on which the network should work, carried out a preliminary inspection and setup of the DPI equipment, consistently mounted nodes, unrolled JSM on virtual infrastructure of the university and politicians of traffic management configured.

"DPI allows network administrators to see a traffic spectrum, to create regular reports on loading of channels, to predict their loading and need of upgrade. However the task facing us was wider, than simple demonstration of "contents" of traffic. For deeper analytics and further development of rules for the differentiated traffic management it was necessary to personalize it with detailing to the specific user", – Elena Fominskaya, the director of the Center of telecommunication products and solutions of Jet Infosystems company reported.

During the project integration of JSM from corporate AD for access for employees of the university and AD Office 365 for access for students is executed. It allowed to personify traffic of all categories of end users of Higher School of Economics National Research University network.

In wireless access to Higher School of Economics National Research University network service of the guaranteed right to a priority of access to a number of online-services and resources (is involved including when holding the training seminars, conferences, etc.) in the dynamic mode on demand.

Specialists of Jet Infosystems company carried out expanded instructing for network administrators of Higher School of Economics National Research University with demonstration of the different scenarios characteristic of the university.

Project Results

Higher School of Economics National Research University received the tool allowing to manage critical overloads and to exclude failures in network functioning, to increase reliability and the continuity of work of web applications qualitatively and to quantitatively analyze a traffic spectrum, to personify net surfers.

Since February, 2015 the equipment accumulates statistics, operating in the normal mode of operation. For September 1, 2015 the functionality of personification is started in administrative buildings, and the network with the general access is taken out of service.
