Thanks to it we could digitize unique objects of our collection, - the chief keeper of State budgetary institution of culture of the city of Moscow "The state museum of history of GULAG" Natalia Karpukhina tells. - For example, an album with 326 original photos of the Solovki camps of the period of 1923-1936. The photos provided in an album belong to the period of foundation in 1923 of the Solovki Camp of Special Function (SCSF), and have the high sociocultural and historical importance both for a research of a subject of repressions, and for subject studying of life and the culture of camp life. Uniqueness of this artifact also that it is created directly in the territory of the Solovki camps belonged to one of heads of the ELEPHANT and it was stored in the headquarters of the camp. The album offers deep prospect for scientific research of history of the Solovki camps, for visitors – an opportunity to see living conditions, back-breaking toil of prisoners, to feel all burden of their bondage and hopelessness, to make out real persons of prisoners and "look in eyes to" the people who suffered from repressions".
"Works on digitization of many objects from the State museum of history of GULAG safety of monuments, incredibly difficult because of a status. The torn and dropping out sheets, the old paper, deformation of a basis of documents, numerous inserts and inserts - all this required extra care and accuracy at digitization, - the leading expert of ELAR corporation on work with cultural institutions Evgeny Mokeev comments. - However the long-term experience of cooperation with the Russian museums, technologies and a professional equipment allow us to create high-quality digital copies of works".
