2021: PM1653 with SAS 24G support

April 27, 2021 Samsung introduced its most productive solid-state store SAS Enterprise for. server storages

PM1653 is a 24G SAS drive based on more than 100 layers of vertical NAND. It provides high speed and capacity for efficient processing of AI and big data tasks on enterprise servers.

Storage capacity can range from 800 GB to 30.72 TB. The disk provides twice the speed compared to the previous generation 12G SAS-3.

The availability of the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) is also required to create a reliable SAS 24G ecosystem in the enterprise market. To ensure a smooth and fast transition to this technology, Samsung collaborates with a supplier of HBAs. Broadcom The latest generation SSD RAID of Broadcom PM1653 and SAS products offer 5x better RAID 5 performance.

The PM1653 is optimized for high-performance enterprise servers because it provides high random read speed - a key measure of server storage performance - up to 800K IOPS. The serial read rate reaches 4300 MB/s, which is the maximum for the 24G SAS interface and is twice the rate of the previous generation PM1643a drive.

The dual-port SSD system allows OEMs of enterprise servers to use one or both ports depending on the system landscape. Even if one of them fails during operation, data can be accessed through the other. The PM1653 supports the 24G platform and the older 12G SAS-3.

Samsung has provided PM1653 SSDs to a number of customers and intends to launch mass production in the second half of 2021.

2018: Mass production PM1643

On February 20, 2018, Samsung announced the start of mass production, according to a South Korean company, of the world's most spacious solid-state drives. We are talking about the PM1643 model, which states a capacity of 32 TB.

The real volume of the novelty is 30.72 TB, since a little more than one terabyte is allocated for system needs. But even with this in mind, the PM1643 can be considered the most capacious SSD device by February 20, 2018.

Samsung PM1643 Drives

The Samsung PM1643 is based on fourth-generation V-NAND flash memory chips with a capacity of 512 Gbit. Each terabyte of space is provided by 512 such chips, grouped into 16 layers. Such "sets" in drive 32. The SSD uses the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface to connect to the computer equipment.

The manufacturer claims a maximum data read speed of 2100 MB/s. Information is recorded at 1700 MB/s.  Read performance reaches 400,000 IOPS, in write operations - up to 50 thousand.

The new controller consists of  nine main  and controlled controllers that were used  in previous SSDs. The built-in software  includes metadata protection, memory retention  and recovery from sudden voltage drops , as well as a new error correction algorithm for reliability.

According to the developers, the drive will be able to work if it is completely rewritten once a day for five years.

Samsung focuses the introduced SSD on the use in servers and other high-level enterprise storage systems.  The cost of the product at the time of announcement is not indicated.

In addition to the 32-terabyte model, the Samsung PM1643 series  includes 15.36. 7.68. 3.84  and 1.92  TB devices.[1]

2016: PM1633a in 2.5 "form factor

Samsung The PM1633a is a solid-state drive (Solid State Drive -) SSD in a 2.5 "form factor. Capacity 15.36 TB.

On March 3, 2016, Samsung Electronics announced the start of deliveries of the Samsung PM1633a solid-state drive with a capacity of 15.36 TB in the form factor 2.5. " The device is designed to be installed in data center storage systems. A [2].

Samsung PM1633a (2016)

The device is assembled of 512 V-NAND flash memory chips in which cells are placed on top of each other in 48 layers and each of them stores three data bits. One such chip has a capacity of 32 GB. Samsung began mass production of such chips in August 2015. In addition to memory chips, SSD has: Samsung's signature controller and 16 GB of DRAM RAM.

The drive is served by a 12 Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. Maximum random read speed 200 thousand IOPS, in random recording mode - 32 thousand. IOPS. According to the company, this is a thousand times more compared to the speed of a hard drive with a similar interface.

The PM1633a flash drive is focused on use in data centers and, according to the vendor, has increased resistance to overwriting. The device supports a complete one-time rewriting of data for a day - up to 15.36 TB of data can be recorded every day on the PM1633a.

The cost of the device is not published.
