The Rossiya Segodnya media group became one of the first large state companies migrating on DBMS PostgreSQL within the import substitution program. At the beginning of 2016 the first stage is completed - passed more than one hundred information systems and applications which are used by tens of millions of users to the new platform.

The first stage of transition

Three-months testing

Performance and reliability of PostgreSQL tested in Rossiya Segodnya within three months. "Results of tests confirmed efficiency of the selected solution. The test stand was followed by a pilot project within which all necessary production schedules were fulfilled. Only then mass and operational transfer of resources to the new platform was initiated. As a result of more than three terabyte of data are postponed for new DBMS. Program implementation took about nine months" — told CNews in^[1].

Migration by own forces

"Migration is performed by exclusively own forces (without involvement of contractors - a comment of CNews), on the existing equipment and is imperceptible for millions of readers. Transition to PostgreSQL allowed not only to cut down expenses on a system, but also many times reduced the cost of service maintenance and upgrade" — reported CNews in media group, having added that the next stage of the program within which solutions on import substitution in the field of corporate IT systems and infrastructure will be studied is already initiated.

Migration on Oracle in 2008.

It is remarkable that actually on Oracle Rossiya Segodnya DBMS migrated relatively recently — in 2008. Also it migrated just with PostgreSQL. Mikhail Chekanov, one of responsible for this process, told the Roem.ru edition that the solution of Oracle was selected by the guide of media group because this solution is "the best in the market", and it "лучшесть" was obvious and clear to the administration because of the price (higher in comparison with analogs).

Anatoly Stoyanovsky who was responsible for moving in 2008 on Oracle DBMS in the comment of Roem.ru told that the solution of Oracle was used, first of all, for storage of especially critical data — in case of RIA it was news content. "We had such configuration — the best servers, the best team of DBA and system administrators were given for Oracle databases. In nearly nine years I do not remember any significant accident with data loss, and only a few, resulted in short unavailability" — he told.

"Initially Oracle was selected on classical strategy "not produce a zoo" — a part of systems already used this DBMS since some ancient years, one clung to another. Each new command at first looked at Oracle cautiously, but after a while recognized convenience of work. In the conditions of dynamic development it was cheaper to pay licenses, than to connect command resources by transfer of the code though the technological capability of it was in the future put initially" — Stoyanovsky added.
