Civil Infrastructure Platform is the joint project focused on development of the open platform for monitoring, management and maintenance of work of components of functioning of critical elements of civil infrastructure.

On April 5, 2016 Linux Foundation announced the Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) project. The CIP platform can be used for management of generation and electric power transmission, oil and gas pipelines, the systems of a water intake and water disposal, communication trunks, health care systems and transport[1].

It is supposed that development of the platform will be in the form of the joint project. Codethink companies Hitachi, Plat'Home joined work, Siemens and Toshiba. Practices of the project will be distributed under the license Apache 2.0, except the components connected with a core Linux, they will be available under license GPLv2.

Infrastructure of power (2015)

Within the CIP platform the open basic layer and a set of program blocks which can be used as a basis for creation of the industrial program systems meeting the requirements of reliability, security and other criteria necessary for application in the crucial fields of life support will be provided. As one of the main objectives of the project participants call elimination of a gap between opportunities of the existing open programs and requirements imposed to crucial industrial software:

  • real-time operation,
  • fault tolerance,
  • predictability of functionality (functional safety)
  • security.

As platform advantages project participants noted:

  • Reduction of time for development - the project provides ready blocks which can be used for fast creation of the systems;
  • The low cost of development - CIP develops as the joint open project in which the interests of different representatives of the industry are considered and costs for development are distributed between all participants;
  • Portability - the platform supports the existing standards and develops according to the concept "included and work" (plug and play);
  • Reliability - the platform is based on Linux kernel which is already applied in many industrial systems;
  • Security and resistance to failures;
  • Progressive tense of maintenance - some components of the platform it is going to support throughout a cycle of functioning of infrastructure (10-60 years).
