Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport JSC is the successor of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Yuzhno‐Sakhalinsk Airport.

Organized in September 1945.

On March 31, 2015, the corporate name of Yuzhno‐Sakhalinsk Airport OJSC was changed to Yuzhno‐Sakhalinsk Airport Joint-Stock Company due to the introduction of Chapter 4 in the Civil Code of the Russian Federation on bringing joint-stock companies into line with the Civil Code.

Performance indicators

2025: Reduced passenger traffic to 1.4 million people

At the end of 2025, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport served more than 1.4 million passengers. This was reported by the Ministry of Transport and Road Facilities of the Sakhalin Region in its Telegram channel on January 9, 2026.

There is no indicated dynamics, but earlier it was reported that 2024 turned out to be a record year for Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport - then 1.54 million passengers passed through it (+ 9% by 2023). According to the regional Ministry of Transport, in 2025, over 140 thousand people were served on routes within the Sakhalin Region. More than 100 thousand passengers took advantage of flights with the remote Kuril Islands - Iturup, Kunashir and Paramushir. In the summer of 2025, the frequency of flights to the Kuriles was increased: up to 21 flights per week to Kurilsk and up to 19 flights to Yuzhno-Kurilsk.

In the main federal direction to Moscow, the maximum number of weekly flights reached 23 in July and 25 in August. Throughout 2025, additional flights were also operated from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to Moscow, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Khabarovsk, as well as along the route Okha - Khabarovsk.

In parallel with the growth of traffic, a large-scale modernization of the aerodrome infrastructure of the region was carried out. In the village of Nogliki, a comprehensive repair of the airfield began, including the restoration of taxiways, apron, runway (runway) and aircraft parking areas. The repair of the airfield infrastructure, aimed at improving transport links with the village, supporting the stable operation of oil and gas projects and ensuring flight safety, should be completed by the end of 2026.

Overhaul of the runway has started in Yuzhno-Kurilsk. In Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the construction of a new runway is ongoing, designed to receive aircraft of all types, including large long-haul aircraft.

In September 2025, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport celebrated its 80th anniversary by confirming the status of a key enterprise in the region, one of the most convenient and punctual airports in the Far East with a professional team, developed infrastructure and a modern airport complex.[1][2][3][4]

History

2023: Opening of a new terminal for 12.5 billion rubles

A new terminal was opened at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport, in which about 12.5 billion rubles were invested. The press service of the Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko announced this on August 7, 2023.

New terminal opened at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport

He added that the launch of the terminal "gives Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk the opportunity to turn into a large passenger and cargo transit hub." The first flight that the new airport received was Moscow - Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, operated by its airline Rossiya.

It is noted that the airport complex was erected at the expense of the regional budget and a private investor. The project was implemented by Krasinvest. The area of ​ ​ the terminal is almost 47.5 thousand square meters. Its planned capacity: on domestic lines - 1 thousand passengers per hour, on international - 600 passengers per hour.

The terminal is equipped with 6 telescopic ramps, 24 check-in counters, 50 passport control cabins, 11 boarding gates, 21 trading points. Movement around the terminal is provided by five escalators and four lifts, as well as 23 elevators.

According to the press service of the island government, thanks to architectural and planning solutions, as well as the use of advanced materials and engineering solutions in the construction, the Sakhalin airport terminal has become the largest and most modern in the Far Eastern Federal District.

By August 7, 2023, a new runway is being built at the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport. It will be able to accept aircraft of all types and work even in the most severe weather conditions.[5]
