Mechanical and Instrument Engineering

Contractors: IBM
Product: IBM Watson Internet of Things (IoT)
На базе: IBM Watson

Project date: 2016/12

On December 15, 2016, IBM IT Corporation announced that it was working with German auto giant BMW on cars of the future with artificial intelligence.

As part of the collaboration, four BMW i8 hybrid supercars will be equipped with the IBM BlueMix platform, which will be the basis for Watson machine learning. The supercomputer will analyze the behavior, preferences and habits of drivers in order to then improve the control of the car, making the driving process more comfortable and safe.

A motorist will be able to communicate with a computer using natural speech. For example, you can ask about the work of some controls, and Watson, having connected to the loaded operating instructions, will give an answer in a conversational style.

Watson is changing how people interact with the real world, helping to create a safe, more efficient and personalized experience at home, at work and on the road, says Harriet Green, head of IBM Watson IoT. - Through this agreement, our companies will jointly build the foundation for drivers to benefit from Watson's speaking and machine learning capabilities.

BMW also intends to use data generated by weather company Weather Co. (its digital business IBM bought in 2015) to update weather reports in cars in real time and build optimal routes of movement in the navigator based on this information.

IBM and BMW engineers will jointly develop new tools and services for cars based on Watson. The headquarters of the automaker in Munich is located near the office of IBM Watson IoT, in which the American corporation is going to invest about $200 million. Investment in the development of Watson technologies for the Internet of Things will amount to $3 billion.[1]
