Velcom transferred network to the virtual platform

Customers: Welcome Mobile operator (Velcom)

Contractors: ZTE Corporation

Project date: 2016/03  - 2016/11

The velcom company brought at the beginning of 2017 into commercial operation completely virtual kernel of a mobile network. This technology innovation influences all configuration of network of the operator, doing it to communication, more flexible and adaptive to the latest technologies.

The project on creation of network with uniform virtual kernel is implemented in only nine months in cooperation with the Austrian command of ZTE company. For project implementation the special software of ZTE TECS (Tulip Elastic Cloud System) was used. Specialists of Telekom Austria Group holding also took part in the project. During the velcom project transformed architecture of the main network and transferred all basic components of a core to a new cloud platform using NFV technology — virtualization of network functions. Thereby the main part of traffic in velcom network will pass through virtual kernel.

According to representatives of operator, virtualization of a core will allow to lift limits on network performance. At the moments of peak loads it will be possible to regulate automatically redistribution of resources and if necessary to add additional server capacities. Also it is expected that implementation of this project will help to implement quicker in velcom network new products and services.

Conversion of a core of network to completely virtual will allow the operator to refuse updating of difficult telecommunication equipment, having replaced it with the normal server IT equipment.

"In a prize there will be also final subscribers as reliability of network in general will increase and time of implementation of new services (time-to-market) will be reduced. We for very short time constructed one of the advanced architecture in the field of telecommunications and also transferred to it the most part of our users" — the technical director of velcom Varnish Christian emphasized.
