Microsoft will spend about $130 million for construction of new data center in Dublin as it needs to increase seriously capacities for rendering cloud services, the company stated. Expansion is a direct consequence of increase in demand for such services as Office 365 Windows Live, Xbox Live, Bing and Windows Azure in Europe, said in the official statement.
Specifications
The new data processing center (DPC) of Microsoft will be located in close proximity to already available DPC of the company in Dublin. Its design already began, but date of input in commercial operation is not called yet.
At the same time the new DPC on the area will make about a third of old data center (10.4 thousand sq.m against 28.1 thousand sq.m), and its power will be slightly lower – 13 megawatts against 16 megawatts. So density of power of new data center will be about 1.3 kilowatts on sq.m.
Increase in density of power in new DPC will allow the company as well to increase number of servers in one rack. It will complicate cooling the equipment, but Microsoft is sure that the model used by it will cope with this task, Stephen McGibbon, the technology director of the company in EMEA region noted.

The cooling system existing at the moment at the DPC constructed earlier assumes active use of fresh air and also if necessary water cooling. Recirculation of air can be also used for heating of premises in cold season.
Comparison with competitors
The existing Dublin DPC of Microsoft has a performance indicator use of energy, PUE, in the amount of 1.25. It is close to PUE in 1.07 data centers of Facebook in Prinvilla (the State of Oregon, the USA). What PUE of new DPC will be, also it is not reported yet.
Last year as a result of blackout in Dublin DPCs of Microsoft and Amazon seriously suffered so the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard service, was unavailable to clients for four hours. In new DPC of Microsoft there will be a system of abnormal power supply on the basis of diesel generators.
