The Road Condition Observer is a road control system.
On April 13, 2017, Continental AG announced the development of a road tracking system. The task of the system is to assess the state of the road based on an environmental assessment.
The Road Condition Observer system classifies road conditions for tires. To do this, sensors installed for the standard road surface quality classification procedure: dryness/moisture/snow/ice are used.
As of April 13, 2017, the system is being tested by automakers.
We use sensors for the Road Condition Observer to get grip information on the road surface. This knowledge allows us to adapt the functions of modern driver assistance systems to current road conditions. For example, to prevent an impending collision, automatic emergency braking must be started significantly earlier in the wet than in the dry. The Road Condition Observer classifies the state of the road based on the assessment of the environment, using camera images in the front of the car, comparison with vehicle dynamics data from ESC, knowledge of meteorological data (temperature, wiper activity and cloud data), tire behavior. The result of these observations is the calculation of the coefficient of friction.
If possible, such a system should be implemented using existing sensors. In addition to wet road detection, the vehicle dynamics model will be integrated into the ESC control unit in the next phase to optimize the performance of the stabilization system. Bernd Hartmann |
