The Bolshoi Theatre increased mobility of employees using Nvidia Grid technology

On June 4, 2019 the Nvidia company reported that the Bolshoi Theatre for increase in mobility of employees uses Nvidia Grid technology.

The performance is not only actors on the stage and musicians in an orchestra pit. The part seen to the viewer is only top of a huge iceberg of work. In addition to troupe and musicians, more than 1000 people of auxiliary divisions are involved in settings Big, as of June, 2019. From them more than 200 people - a command which is engaged in creation of the digital passport of a performance. Exactly the same as in the automobile industry at first create a digital prototype of future car, in theaters also at first create the project of a performance in 3D.

All events on the stage (direction of light, scenery, arrangement of actors) at first are modelled in three-dimensional space in CAD-applications. At a stage of an approval of the project production group the performance looks actually as a small game in which in real time it is possible to set and change necessary parameters. Only after approval by all participants of process of the project of a performance in 3D, elements of a scenic environment go to production.

For June, 2019 is big not only the building of the Historical scene with the well-known quadriga. The geographically distributed organization of theater includes several buildings located not only in the different districts of Moscow, but also in other cities of Russia. In the course of preparation of performances supervayzor of projects ply between different locations, coordinating work of artists-technologists of theater on places.

The task – to create an internal cloud resource and to provide to the staff of art and technical department access to digital projects from any place and any time was set for IT department.

"Virtualization of jobs based on NVIDIA GRID technology became the most logical solution which allowed to solve the main problem - to provide to designers mobility. The possibility of creation of uniform flexible IT infrastructure with dynamic resource allocation became a pleasant bonus for IT directorate", noted Roman Ulizko, the Chief information officer of the Bolshoi Theatre

The solution was implemented based on a linking of graphic NVIDIA Tesla P40 accelerators and software of VMware Horizon and allowed to provide 44 virtualized desktops for work with professional graphics packages (Adobe, Autodesk, etc.). In plans of IT department of theater to bring the number of the virtualized places with support of graphics to 200.

At the beginning of 2019 the system of virtualization of the Bolshoi Theatre earned on complete power. Thanks to it employees of a project team have an opportunity to work on projects from any place, including from the house, and tour collectives ceased to travel to the companies of mini-server. All necessary projects and tools are available to work in a cloud.

Also since 2011 the Bolshoi Theatre performs forward translations of ballet performances in movie theaters of Russia and the world. The project received the name "The Big Ballet at Cinema". Helps provide smooth broadcast of events from Big hardware coding based on solutions of NVIDIA.

"Theatrical activity as any creative process, it is heavy to standardize. Change of the plan can happen at the latest moment.
