2017: Announcement

In May, 2017 scientists of the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced the GadCalc service allowing to calculate a dose of introduction of gadolinium contrast substances for magnetic resonance imaging and other medical procedures.

Service is created in the form of the application for iPhone and iPad. In it information on ten contrast agents approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is loaded. After the choice of one of them and the indication of weight of the patient the program calculates a substance dose which needs to be entered. The creator of software Brian Wu from the University of Wisconsin claims that it is not just the dose calculator.

The GadCalc application takes a step forward and offers the formula used for obtaining volume of a dosage. One more option allows users to browse the instruction on medical application of the contrast agent in which important information on medicine is provided. Use options, possible risks, information on the agent, data on production and even about the current clinical trials — all this some things which you will find in the list — Wu said.

According to him, by May, 2017 few applications similar to GadCalc are presented at the market. At the same time developers note that calculations which are made in the program are help though in practice were always exact and did not lead to the incidents connected with overdose.

To calculate the correct dose of contrast substance on paper, it is necessary to increase the recommended dose by the weight of the patient and to separate into concentration of substance. There are situations when it is necessary to define a dose quickly, and then GadCalc can be useful, doctor Scott Reeder from the University of Wisconsin-Madison noted.
