On May 25, 2017 it became known of implementation by SITA company of technologies of the mixed reality for carrying out researches at the airport of Helsinki. As technology of implementation development of Microsoft HoloLens is used.
Project Progress
During the joint project partners used HoloLens technology to reproduce the airport center of operational management (AOCC) in the mode of the mixed reality.
For project implementation specialists of SITA Lab involved the solution Day of Operations developed by SITA in quality of a source. With its help they provided a method of visualization and use of service data of the airport, including data on location of aircrafts, data on movements of passengers and analytical information of retailers.
Using HoloLens the operator could see the three-dimensional picture created from several sources allowing to correlate the events brought to dashboards to what occurs in the model of the airport functioning in real time.
The technology of the mixed reality combining technologies of augmented and virtual reality gives us something bigger, than just the interface. She gives us a view of the world and allows to solve usual problems differently. Thanks to her, the physical phenomena connect to digital data. Results of our first experiments indicate that, in relation to activity of airlines and airports, this technology has perspectives – I mean both operation of the equipment, and its service, and personnel training. There has to be the same that occurred when we refused computers and addressed smartphones and technologies of recognition of the speech. We at last had an opportunity to glance in zaekranny space. Jim Peters, technical director of SITA and head of SITA Lab
The HoloLens technology finds application in the most different industries, from health care before engineering design. Work which is done by SITA clearly demonstrates as it is possible to use possibilities of HoloLens for management of difficult data arrays and decision makings in the airport environment. Its results show what can achieve, having placed this new technology at service of the industry of air transport as with its help to reach new level in the solution of the most different tasks, from training of employees to the organization of integrated management of activity. Greg Jones, managing director of division of Worldwide Hospitality & Travel of Microsoft corporation
Project Results
During the research data from different sources of the Helsinki airport were used, the complete picture of its daily functioning is as a result received:
- the data on movement of passengers arriving in real time,
- statistics of fullness of premises of the airport,
- information on location of aircrafts;
- data collection from places of an exit of passengers to landing,
- information on a status of runs,
- waiting time passengers of examination by security services
- time spent by passengers in retail outlets.
All information was classified taking into account categories of passengers.
The innovative initiative of SITA Lab brought undoubted benefit to staff of the Helsinki airport. We opened eyes on a chance which the technology of the mixed reality, in terms of improvement of our approaches to the organization of activity gives. It is great that we were the first who together with SITA tested this innovative technology. Eero Knuutila, head of division of development of services of the Airport of Helsinki
Results of a research showed: unlike virtual reality, the mixed reality does not disorient the person and does not cause unpleasant collateral feelings.
